has anyone else experienced similar probs of low in call volume when using headphones (either those supplied with the product or after-market)?

Majority of the time when I talk on the phone I use the headphone/mic. On the S2 I've noticed that in call volume is really low, even when set to 100%. At first I thought this might be due to the headphones that were supplied with the phone but when I changed to my after-market headphones there was no difference to in call volume.

The weird thin is that when I listen to music through the headphones even 50% volume is more than loud enough for me. Is this caused by hardware or software fault, any ideas?

Yes I have the same problem.

I'm on my 2nd device (1st one replaced due to bad battery and turning itself off) and both were the same. My 3gs was much louder during calls .

I imagine this is fixable as it must be software related?

try changing the default volume value in the service mode menu.
    call this number *#*#197328640#*#*
This will open the service mode menu.
    choose option [5] AUDIO
    choose option [1] (VOICE CALL)
    choose option [2] HEADSET
    choose option [1] Volume
choose option [1] SRC Speech RX Volume
    choose option [5] 5_lvl : 87
press the menu button (left side)
    choose Key Input
enter a value between 0 and 100, I choose 100 the loudest setting.
    press ok
now press the menu button and select back this should save (don't use the right side back key you normally use to navigate the phone or you will quit out of the settings) keep hitting the menu and back until you leave the service mode menu.
You will also note you can change volume settings for other things like bluetooth, hand sets, video call etc.

Thanks for that mate. I will try it later on this evening and hopefully it should sort out the low volume issue.

Do you happen to know what the other items are in the service menu? There seems to be a lot of abbreviations RX and TX volume, any idea what these are?

Hi, SGS2 is an excellent phone, perfect in all ways for me except two. One of those is low in-call volume. I literally cannot hear some people talking with the enclosed headset.

Now, there is the *#*#197328640#*#* hack which appears to help a bit, but has to be applied after every reboot, which is a hassle.

Any other ideas how to solve it?

    Hey,

Are people with quiet phones actually on faulty handsets? because my phone, through both the ear piece, and the bundled headphones, is rediculously loud in calls, to the point that I have had to turn the in call volume down to half. When I first made a call with the head phones, it nearly blew my ear drum it was so piercing (exaggeration but you get the picture)

    Biff.

Interesting idea, Biff. Mine plays music just fine, it's just calls which are the problem.

I'm interested to hear what others feel what their call volume is like.

my in call volume is fine and i use a bluetooth headset. no complaints. at first it was a little low but that was because my headset was low. with it all the way up, people don't sound too low or too loud.

Mine is perfectly OK as well. If I were to turn up the volume to full using the supplied earphones I suspect it would hurt at the least. Call volume has not been an issue for me and my hearing isn't brilliant.

I've had 2 handsets both with the low call volume issue when using the headset.

Just a thought....... but is anyone with this issue in the uk and on 02?

Mine is on Vodafone, in the UK.

So, N-C, both of your handsets had the issue? Did you eventually exchange for a third which didn't?

No still on my 2nd phone. Decided to stick with it cause I was thinking it was fixable with new firmware maybe?!? 1st one got replaced for other reasons in addition to this.

Really hoping its not hardware because I'm past the dreaded 28 day replacement policy.

It will be interesting to see who else has this issue and with what network. Anybody have this problem with a rooted phone?

I should add that music volume isn't / wasn't an issue with both phones, also phones earpiece volume is fine in calls. Only problem is the headphones and I have tried different makes and concluded it is the phone.

How does the 28 day replacement policy work?

I'm a bit afraid of going for replacement as I have some on and off travel planned for which I need the phone, and it's probably out of stock with Vodafone so I will not get the replacement immediately.

Apparently phones that go faulty within 28 days are replaced. After this time they may offer to repair the phone instead.

If I bought it from Vodafone online do I need to send it back to Vodafone online or can I exchange it in a Vodafone shop which has it in stock?

This I can confirm is an issue with some of the very first examples. I called Samsung, they replaced the handset (annoying to set it all up again) and I have had no further problems. They acknowledged on the phone it was a known issue, but as far as I can tell are doing little to inform people.

So the handset is faulty and Samsung know about it. Take it back

I am facing the same problem with my brand new SGS2 ( 2 mobiles both purchased in single transaction) this is my first product from Samsung but is total disaster....disappointment...anyways I believe the problem is due to the Low Media volume...look...when we connect headsets to listen phone calls..the volume rocker only increases the in call volume but whilst headsets connected it does not works because the phone gets into media state....so if media volume is low whilst the headsets attached and you are listening to in call instead of music..the volume remains low (as if you are listening music)...the best thing is to go to settings> sound> volume> and increase media volume then disconnect the call and reconnect you will be fine...but this is not the permanent resolution you have to di it again and again.... I am taking my phone to the samsung technician shortly,,,,hopefully they will rectify it permanently.......

I feel exactly the same. My in call volume is usually too loud and I keep it somewhere in the 60% range. I'm so happy with my SGS 2 that I wonder how people complain about everything in this phone.

I am on O2 in the UK and have not had a problem with in call volume, either with the phone itself or the supplied Samsung headphones. In fact, I was using the headphones to make a call whilst walking over a bridge in the pouring rain the other day and I could hear the other person (and myself in my head!) perfectly clear. I had been listening to music at about 60/70% volume prior to making the call. This was also after the doctor advised me my ears are totally blocked with wax!!
