Permanent vs. temporary root

So, a temporary root means when you restart the phone you're unrooted - is this being done to many phones by manufacturers, or just the G2? I'm curious. I've grabbed RyanZa's programs before they were removed by Google - not that I'm going to use them, just to have them (Z4Root and Z4Mod). I wonder if Samsung is busy crippling the Captivate with the 2.2 (or maybe 2.3) update?
