For the past week my droid has been acting funny. At first it would shutdown for no reason. I solved that (thanks to someone here) by pulling the battery and restarting. However, there is still a lag when opening apps. For example, if I open my text messages there is a definite lag there. I have pics for everyone and sometimes it takes so long to load the pics that I can see it displaying info by phone number.

Other times when I open something there will be a black screen for a couple seconds before the app opens. Is there a way to diagnose things and/or see what is using the CPU like I could w/ windows task manager? I downloaded OS monitor, but I'm not even sure what I'm looking at in that program to tell you the truth.

I would like to root my phone, however before I do so I want to figure out why things are so slow right now.

Sometimes when I turn the phone on there are no shortcuts but I can read text saying CPU is refreshing or CPU is reloading...something like that. I'm not sure of the exact wording

Judging from your post, you are not rooted, and thus are using the default 2.1 release for the DROID.

The 3D app drawer is a major resource hog, and with stock settings it is virtually impossible to use if you have a lot of apps running - and even if you do not. # apps installed will also affect this (though not as much).

Without having to root, an alternative would be to look into a different home screen app - I have tried numerous, and my 2 favorites are Helix (not Helix 2) and LauncherPro, and sine I am using a pre-release of 2.2, and Helix will not work on 2.2 yet, I am using LauncherPro.

You'll lose the 3D look - but you'll gain an infinite amount of stability.

Ty. I actually have launcher pro installed. I don't necessarily mind rooting. I just don't want to root if there is a problem with my phone

Make your normal Home Screen your default, clear it of all icons, shortcuts, and widgets, then go into Settings, remove settings for Home, then click the home softkey and when it asks you which one to pick, select LauncherPro and make it default.

That should, after your next boot, hopefully prevent the 3D Launcher from loading into memory anymore, and speed things up for ya.

I clicked everything in settings and can't find how to clear home! Do I just set launcher pro as default?

Setting --> Applications --> Manage applications --> press the menu key --> change from downloaded to all --> find HOME

I found ShapeWriter and Swype took up a ton of resources. Try disabling those if you have them installed.

It seems that OSmonitor and the browser is where the lag is.browser really slow while typing. VERY slow typing this. Words don't even show up before I move on to the next word

Here are some apps I use to try & get a better idea of what's going on, who's doing what, ...

SeePU & System Panel provide high-level view. I like SeePU notification icon that shows both CPU & Memory. I like System Panel Monitor, History. System Panel has a good memory mgmt writeup in its Menu Help.

CPU & Memory Utilization provide more detailed info -- per process. Can set CPU Util to auto refresh; do this and sit back & watch the show. Mem Util displays Current & Peak utilization.
    SeePU++
    Memory Usage Plus
    CPU Usage Plus
    SystemPanel
This list was generated with Listables! Free on the Android Market. For more info see http://alostpacket.com/

Edit to add: be nice if I knew actual names of my apps, eh? Sorry about that. Ones with plus in name are paid, but I started w/ free versions, which I believe are still available.
