Phone not connecting to 3G...only EDGE and GPRSSupport

Hi there. I'm new to Android. This is my first Android phone.

I have the Incredible S running on Android 2.3.3.

My problem is that the phone never picks up the 3G network and is only on EDGE (E) or GPRS (G).

Does anyone know if this is something a phone setting will take care of, or if I have a defect on my phone?

I have tried to set the PRL to different settings like GSM auto (PRL), WCDMA preferred, CDMA auto (PRL), GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and none of them will get me to 3G.

I'm hoping that my phone is not defective...thanks in advance for your help.

Just to add info to my question. I did some more searching on the Net and I believe this has something to do with the fact that my Incredible S was purchased from Asia (Hong Kong) and I am now using it in Canada (Rogers Wireless).

I think I read that Rogers in Canada not only uses a different frequency than Europe and Asia, but they use a different 3G connection method (or something like that).

Does this sound like it could be a cause?

Basically, am I SOL here? Or is there something I can do about it, including rooting?

For posterity sake, I'm going to post the reply I got from HTC support on this issue:

"We are sorry to inform you that due to the 3G network compatible issue, HTC Incredible S does not support the network of Canada is HSPA850/1900. We had confirmed that the 3G network of HongKong is support WCDMA/900/AWS/2100 MHz."

In case there is anyone else out there who is in the same situation that I am in, here is why the Incredible S, as it currently exists, does not work on Canada's 3G Rogers Network.

There is an Incredible S model 710A that supports the North American (NAM) 3G frequencies. I just bought a Bell Canada version off Ebay and I'm using it on AT&T 3G network. This same model will work on Roger's 3G network, too.
