Ok, so we just got the Eris for my gf (I have a rooted droid) and she's loving the phone, but is def a BIG adjustment from the blackberry. The biggest problem that we are having is that the phone will not ring until about the 3rd or 4th ringtone, which by the 6th or so, it goes to VM anyways....

any idea what can be causing this?

so If I call her (or anyone) I'll hear the calling tone from my end, and on the 4th one or so, finally her phone will ring, but you have about 5 seconds then it goes to voice mail... can anyone help me with this?

if it matters, I do have google voice setup with gvoice as the stock vmail... I don't remember if it was doing that before this

Change the slot cycle by dialing "*PST"

    Password is six zeroes "000000"

Go to modem. Slot cycle, set it to 0

    Press Menu and "save settings."

The phone should automatically shut down and reboot.

Also, another thing you should do is call "*228" and do both the 1 and 2 option. Your phone reboots after each one, so you will have to go back again to do the other one.

That should fix everything. PM me if you need me to troubleshoot with you further.

Thanks guys! I did do the 228 with 1 and 2, and it's down to 2 rings now. I would still like 1 though. Should I change the cycle to 1 or 0? will it make that much of a diff in battery life?

The phone rang on the end of the 2nd ringtone... total of about 9 seconds... I don't think that's good

My droid rings on the end of 1st one...

anything we can do to fix this?

There could be apps interfering with it as well. Save for Google Voice, what else do you have that needs data?

I did a factory reset and tried with nothing on the phone... still did it.

but as look more into it, it's not so much the 3rd or 4th ring. It's actually the fact that the phone goes into Vmail in 12 seconds.

when I call my droid, it takes 25 seconds to forward to call the vmail (gvoice vmail)

on the eris, from the time the phone rings, it takes 12 seconds to hit vmail (both gvoice and vzw vmail) with the 2nd ring not even ringing, it almost gives me 8-10 seconds to get to the phone...

something isn't right, and I'm pretty sure it's on verizon's end here, not the eris. the eris doesn't decide when the call is forwarded to vmail. Think I'm going to give them a call

(just tried again, now it went to vmail in 9 seconds!!!)

The problem you describe is one of the problems I have been experiencing. I believe that I often have calls that I NEVER hear ring. those that do ring, go to voicemail too quickly for me to get to them. Last week I had a friend with a husband in the hospital...there was no way to reach her if I didn't catch her call. This is not acceptable.
The Verizon rep adjusted something--sounded like the slot cycle to me, last week. I am still having the problem. They replaced my Eris today--now on my 3rd.
They did mutter something about one of the updates being on hold--to see how things went.
BTW--the guy next to me in line was also switching out an Eris. He said his had trackball issues.

I can't help beyond what's already been posted in here and around the forums, but I just feel like posting some things that cross my mind about these issues.

First and foremost with regard to the Eris itself (something I keep repeating because it seems to help explain some of the ongoing issues with this particular device): great design, good looking, but assembled and inspected poorly, thus the spotty reports of its reliability. Quality control, for some reason, failed many users at the point of manufacture and assembly.

Also, the slot cycle index setting determines how often the device polls the nearest tower for incoming calls; it has nothing to do with signal strength or quality.

I think some people with missed calls, calls going to voice mail without igniting a ringer and dropped calls are suffering poor signal. That can be due to so many reasons that it is mind boggling; reasons in the phone (back to poor quality control by HTC) and reasons not in the phone (weather/atmospheric conditions, proximity to tower, tower quality, etc).

We've tested this at work and at home with Verizon and Sprint and with several devices over the years; it's remarkable how I can be on a call in the below-ground floor in a huge hospital with two bars signal strength on my Eris, and right next to me is a lab tech with a "dead" Incredible or a doctor with his Blackberry of no use to him: no incoming or outgoing calls possible on their devices.

I've even called and summoned a friend from his house with his Eris, on the 2.1 OTA, to come to my location, and have seen his Eris die right there as I text, make calls and browse the internet with no problems on my Eris.

Updates probably can't fix it, so the crap-shoot of exchanging it for another one, one which was quite likely returned defective and could itself remain defective, begins; thus the posted stories in here of multiple visits to Verizon for yet another "refurb."

I would not stick with the Eris if I exchanged it due to serious issues and found the new one to also have issues. I'd kindly explain that I need another model of phone that has not suffered so many bugs since its inception.

Those of us with good Erises keep them, and mine has honestly had zero bugs, no signal problems (the bars look low most of the time, but the device behaves as if signal strength is maximum) and no "silent call bug" or any of the other complaints we see reported.

Frisco- I agree with just about all that you posted. In fact, I mentioned exactly that to the rep yesterday--I asked if they were replacing "lemon" phones with "lemon" phones. So many of these issues all seem related. Phone lag seems like it may be responsible for some of the ringing problems. We have also tested it and it takes a long time before my phone to actually ring--despite the fact that the caller hears ir ringing on their end.
If this phone does not work correctly--I will be looking for a different brand of phone.

Way to go; I think it's the obvious solution to ongoing Eris problems: no more Erises. ;)

Now begins the fun of selecting another device.. have you thought much about what you'll get next ? Sticking with Android would be a smart thing to do these days.

So if we got the eris from best buy, will we be able to return the Eris and get that incredible incredible for 120 since we already renewed the contract at Verizon?

I rather try another eris if anything. Girl likes the Eris and its cheap... does everything she wants it to and it's small unlike the bigger incredible. She actually loved her new Eris. I just rather fix the problem. I'd the problem persists, I'll make a trip to best buy and get another one. It is an older model, so they are getting very hard to find as well

That linked me to a droid door free. She hates the droid. I have one... i tried to get her to have mine and I'd get the x but she wouldn't do it lol.

Honestly guys, I think she's willing to trya few erises before giving up. She loves it. And I can't blame her. Sexy phone... very capable for her and small like she wanted. Now if i can only get it running right

Is this mostly software or hardware issues? If i have to, I'll root it... just don't want to root it much because shed doesn't need a rooted phone... but If it'll fix the problems...

I have not thought about what I would get next. I do want to stick with the Android. I really love the appearance of the Eris--it really is a sexy phone. Initially, I had thought I would be willing to just pay some more money for an Incredible. Now I am thinking that a lot of the problems are HTC related--and that makes me hesitate. I was looking at the reps Moto Droid yesterday---is looks so big and huge and clunky. A lot will have to do with what Verizon says/does.

I have been really frustrated with this phone and seriously considered just paying early termination and switching companies--out of principal! We have 4 lines--my bill is HUGE and I missed several calls from a friend who's husband is very ill in the hospital the other day. No way to call her back. Really pissed me off. Done with my rant now--thanks for letting me vent.

Do people have better luck with this stuff at the store or on the phone?

That would be a deal breaker for me, Lynda; no way I'd keep a so-called smart phone that could not even be a phone for basic communication. I'm sorry to hear about that.

If I had that going on I'd probably grab an X by Motorola, or perhaps an Ally by LG if funds were an issue.

This may be a typo, as it did not work when I tried it. Use ##PST instead.

    Thanks though smacky.
