Root [Verizon] Phone rooting. I need to do this now. What are the downsides?

I want to learn the basics of rooting my phone. The pros and cons. Can someone point me in the right direction?

My take on this: you need to be fully informed, aware, and understand what it is you're doing. If you don't, you can easily do something that will leave your device in an undesirable (or non-functioning) state.
