Help Picture quality question...

Going on from the thread about the Desire lens cover causing misting and affecting picture quality, I tried taking photos with the battery cover on and off, but to be honest I can't see that much difference. The lens cover is certainly scratched but I'm not seeing the improvements - even the file sizes are remaining about the same with the cover on and off (someone on the other thread mentioned that piccies with the cover off would most likely be a fair bit larger because the camera sensor is picking up more info). Any comments? For info, my settings are as follows:

White balance: Auto
ISO: Auto
Resolution: 5M (2592 x 1952)
Widescreen: Resolution - 4:3 (Standard photo size)
Quality: High
Metering mode: Average

Ignore me. I changed the settings to widescreen (5:3) and the difference is scarily apparent...
