I recently made the jump from a regular phone to an android phone. What i didn't know was that the phone I got (and indeed most android phones) are not truly "open."

My motorola cliq (with its motoblur UI) is not plain android. I learned that it isn't upgradable. My recently attempt at getting google voice to work with sipgate for free wifi calling was thwarted (perhaps) by this interface.

I somehow had an idea that android OS would be like linux on a PC--upgradable and fully customizable.

I am still within the period where I can return the Cliq and change to a different phone. Any advice? I would prefer a phone that runs plain android, a recenly (2.x) version, and without any skin/UI that I cannot remove.

    THanks,
    Neil

The most recent phone that runs on true vanilla android is the Nexus One.
