Sense is just an "experience" running on top of Android. Makes it prettier, less boring. And more screens.

Sense is essentially a User Interface replacement for Android. It's just a more "pretty" (pretty being subjective), functional alternative to running stock Android.

Here's a youtube video to help you out.

Would it run smoother/faster without an extra layer of programing if the phone was rooted if that's the right word, back to standard android?

Basically the same except it doesn't have the three-button launcher at the bottom of the screen. Just has a single tab to open the app drawer. Sense just also adds a lot of widgets and slightly different (most just in appearance) Mail and Messaging apps as well as some overall polish to the menus. It's really not all that radical of a change.

Sense also gives you 7 home screens instead of the standard 5.

I tried it both ways and found it made no difference. Quickly put sense back on.
