OK, I have had my HD since October and i love it, I spent a lot of time on these forums as a Hero owner and installed a lot of custom ROM's mainly because I wanted the latest release before my operator was going to provide it, and mainly because the Hero wasn't that snappy to use out of the box.

however the HD (as far as i am aware) does everything I need, its super fast, and super stable (apart from having to toggle data now and then due to no connection). I'm looking forward to Gingerbread and I have seen a list of whats new.

My question i suppose is, what are the main gains from custom roms currently, and are they out weighted by the con's, because in my HERO experience there are a few con's that come with it...

    Thanks in Advance Jaff

The DHD is indeed a great phone. It has everything I need and more, so I am not complaining. Its battery capacity is also great. Now that I'm over the "oh a new phone period", and tweaked it, I have now successfully managed to get 48 hours on about 50% battery capacity :p (at writing moment, usage is 1 day, 20 hours, 62% battery capacity left, display use of 40 mins and voice calls of 17 mins, phone idle is 1 day, 19 hours, and cell standby is 1 day, 20 hours. Android OS isn't even showing on battery usage). So this phone is kick ass for me.

However, right now, the pros and cons as I can think of are:

    - Overclocking (but what is the use on the DHD)
    - More system control (however, I like the Sense ROM, in combo with Sense UI)
    - Apps can get more advanced features, like battery defenders/juice defenders can control more communication and screen systems when the phone is rooted
    - Installing costum features and ROMs (but as I said, I love the HTC Sense UI, which is mainly reason why I wanted the DHD)

    - Lose your warranty/guarantee and insurance benefits
    - It is very risky, and if you don't know what you are doing, you will with 90% certainty ruin your phone
    - There can be MANY bugs in costum ROMs, and even if many people complain about HTC support, there will be a longer period of time between updates for the ROMs, and you got no support lines. Many bugs might not even be spotted, but compromise your phone is many ways and even drain unnecessary battery.

These are just a few of those I can think of :). Any one else with any more inputs?

For me, the cons greatly outweigth the benefits, as I want to take care of my phone, and don't really need any additional features to my DHD. If the phone was a different cheaper model, I might consider it, and just have fun with playing around :)

agreed, with my old Hero i installed the latest 'official' custom roms i.e. the asian ones since they always get theirs 2-3 months before europe.

but i find with my DHD, 2.2 does pretty much everything i need it to do, so right now, im not that bothered about 2.3. the only possibility would be later on in the contract, may be 5-6 months before im due a new phone, will i think about rooting and installing... say.. android 3.x? as a tester and seeing what its like etc etc
