Pokemon Go and Google account

I haven't used the game, but it is widely reported in the news that a fairly innocent looking dialogue about logging into the game with Google account granted the app complete access to your Google account (read and send emails etc).

I don't have full details (maybe someone else can chime in with first hand experience or link), and I believe the app has since been updated to correct this, but it sounds like maybe a security flaw in android or Google account management (Google should have given clear warning). What do you think?

When I was setting up the game it asked me for my google account info to sign in, BUT, let me create a new account on the spot. So I did.
