Power down problem

I have VM Triumph rooted with Terminal Emulator and using stock rom. Was trying to silence power up and down VM logo noise by changing file names per U tube vid. Didn't work so went back and changed them back now when trying to power off it just reboots. Is there a fix that is not to technical? Thanks for any help

Check the file names VERY carefully. Case counts. PowerOff.mp3 and Poweroff.mp3 are two different files.

I just inserted "the" in front of file name and didn't change anything else, per video. Went back and removed "the". I see a hard re-set is maybe a fix but will I have to un-root first?

    You don't need to unroot
Start with making sure the PowerOn.mp3 and Poweroff.mp3 files are propper. No spaces, even hidden ones. And make sure they are real .mp3s

Alright, let's do a checklist of what's going on.

    What ROM, stock?
What root method? I'm presuming you used the method by b-random.
Do you have a Stock ROM you could pull files from? If not, use my signature. Grab either one as we are going to pull files from it.

I rooted using the sudo with terminal emulator. Running stock rom and 2.2.2 android version. I went in with root browser to rename files and changed them back. Phone still works fine with no unusual battery drain, just when you try to power down it is silent and no VM animation runs, you just get Motorola logo that goes off then back on like a re boot. I have gone back in and opened the files and they will play as mp3.

If I remember correctly there are two folders that hold the animations and sound files. One is /hidden, the other is /hidden/(something else hidden, like hidden data). Open a stock ROM and make sure that the bootanimation.zip, powerOn.mp3, powerOff.mp3 files are in the same locations.

I might have the file names wrong as I don't have the phone and I'm at work so I can't download the stock ROM and look into it on my end.

Do your best to parse what I'm trying to tell you and report back either way.

    File locations in question:

    /system/media/audio/ui/VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3

    /hiddendata/Power-on sound/VMU_Power_Up.mp3

These files can not be deleted or renamed.
Easiest way to get silent boot/shut down is to open these two files in an audio editor (like Audacity which is a free Windows program) silence them, save and replace the originals.

... of course that would be after you figure out what got screwed up. :D

OK, the power on animations and power on sound are in, hidden-data file and they both work when the phone re-boots. The power down mp3 is in ,system-media-audio-ui file. This file is the first one on list and the files appear to be in alpa order. I don't know how this one made it to the top. If you long press on file you can see permissions and I don't know if they changed or not. Thank you both for your help. There is a file in hidden-data. just below the power on sound named shutdown. It contains 12 files named HSPRO25_PowerOff_FIN_01... Is this anything?

Can anyone tell me if a hard re-set would restore everything back like it was or not? I'm not getting anywhere like this. I saw the hard re-set on u tube but its the same person that got me here in the first place and I'm a little gun shy of him. I read where another person did the same thing I did and he had deleted the VM Power on file. His phone was doing the exact re booting instead of powering off. Don't know if re set would bring any of this back. Thanks for any help

Grab the stock ROM from my signature. It will restore the phone to near factory settings. It will keep the custom recovery so you can flash whatever you want. Or you can use the unroot one that will restore the recovery also.

I am running stock ROM now, is that what you are talking about? Sorry I don't understand some of this. If it is then you are saying I can restore with it and should I un root first or just re root after restored? If I transfer everything to sd card I understand the restore will not erase that.

The point of using a stock ROM (even though you are on it now) is that you will know it's right. No need to unroot as the flashing process will take care of that.

From reading what you have done I don't see if you changed your recovery. I'm presuming you didn't as you are confused. It was such a normal thing for me to do I didn't think that people may not do it, my bad. If you need help with the recovery part, let us know. It's not hard and only a little scary. Just ask ask ask.

Ok thanks. I have Titanium Backup Pro. If I do a back up of all user apps and system data and Titanium is on the sd card will it be there and everything else on the card after restore? We are talking recovery mode using vol up and dwn and power buttons and do I need to wipe cache and then do factory re set or just do re set? If you know of any u tube video covering this please let me know. Thanks again

My suggestion is to put a custom recovery on and then make a backup. Then you need to install the stock ROM, b_randon14 made it so that it factory resets and restores files on hidden partition. Then look at the second post of either sharp ROM or U9000 ROM for instructions on how to silence the boot sounds. Or just install one of those and the shutdown sound is not played.

    Good luck.

I really appreciate your reply and I wish I were more Tech savy. I know just enough to screw it up and not enough to read what you said and do it.

Lol, the triumph is one of the easiest phones to put a recovery on. Just boot to download mode, I think vol down and power. Then when you plug it in to the computer it will show you the mobile partition. Do not touch anything except recovery.img. Then just like that, you have a custom recovery. You have to pull the battery to get out of download mode.

You can fix it with out all of that, but I figured I would give you the sure fire way to fix it. Everything that you need to know is in the all things root stickies.

Basically stock ROM requires these files, and if not there it will not work properly. The names, permissions and everything has to be correct for it to work. I think I may have a flashable hidden partition zip in my Sharp ROM thread. I made some modifications for Sharp ROM and provided a zip to change it back. It should be somewhere in the thread, you'll have to search for hidden partition. You can also just try the directions to silence again, the links to the files is down but the zip is still there with the silenced files.

Ok, I'm going to give it a try. When I get to recovery img. do I open it or just click on it? After pull bat and out of recovery what about the stock ROM. Do I just use what I .have cause b_randon14 page is closed. Sorry I guess these are pretty stupid questions but I just like to understand what I'm trying to do. It looks like a lot of the links to videos and ROMS are gone. I got the 5.0.2.6 CWM and hope its OK to use. Thanks for your help, here goes !!!

Yes dsmryder has provided that stock ROM, b_randon has moved on and took down the links.

You are just replacing the recovery.img with the custom recovery.img. I urge you to look through the all things root guide to find all the info you need.

OK I am doing the backup now, when it is finished what do I do next? I am downloading the Froyocream Sandwich v 2.0.zip ,is this one OK ?
  23. dick302

    dick302 Well-Known Member

well followed instructions and after installing ROM and re booting all I get is GOOGLE on the screen, on and off. What next? I am restoring from my back up, hope that works. What did I do wrong? I followed the guide by agentc13 on installing CWM and custom ROM in the stickies.

    First congrats on recovery.

What is the purpose of downloading a different ROM than has been discussed here? Froyocream Sandwich v 2.0.zip is not a viable ROM, it is GB based and unfinished. If I remember correctly. I can't support you for this issue as it does not pertain to the situation.

The only ROM that fixes the hidden partition is stock ROM. Or you can flash my hidden partition zip from the Sharp ROM thread.

As far as trying new ROMs, you'll have to find which one suits you best. I would stay away from most of the older froyo ROMs as a lot of them never really got finished. There are tons of threads discussing this.

If you want any more help with the reboot issue, you will have to follow my directions and report back. Once this is done you can become the flashaholic that it sounds like you will be. ;)

If you could direct me to the proper ROM I would appreciate it. One that is actually working. I think I got the hang of this. I have tried to find the Sharp ROM but not having much luck. Can you give me a clue? I was told to grab the stock ROM from my signature, but I don't know what that means or how to do it.
