    Hi,

i ve a Hero with Build Number "2.73.707.9". It was bought in Singapore from the carrier SingTel.

I ve read thru the instruction in the thread "How To Root + Install Custom ROM + Backup + More", but there dun seem to be an appropriate way for my Hero, since the method for South East Asia model is for "2.73.728.5" instead...

so will that same method work for my Hero (aka the Gold Card method)???

That topic you've been reading makes it seem as if every firmware has to be rooted in a different way, but there's only two sorts of firmware for the hero when it comes to rooting: patched and unpatched ones. If your phone is running a patched version you'll have to use the goldcard method to switch to an unpatched one.

You can tell which one you have by trying to run the flashrec/instant root apps, which are blocked on patched firmwares. So if those apps work, you can skip the goldcard part altogether.

alright, after installing InstanRoot.apk, a notification popped and says "Instant Root failed - Root access was not acquired"

so does it mean mine is patched?

Bear in mind you would only use instant root on your existing firmware, so you can use the Titanium Backup app to backup your apps. So if instant root is blocked on your firmware, then don't try to use it on the downgraded firmware, as it wont have your apps on it and you're wasting your time. Just go straight to using flashrec.

You can always use MyBackup Pro (free 30 day trial) to backup you apps in stead, as it doesn't require root.
