im sorry if this has already been answered, but would i be able to use a family member's upgrade to get the evo? my mom has had the same phone for years and will probably never change.

If she doesn't mind you using it, you could just upgrade her line and then use the online ESN activation thing to activate the right phone on the right line. Not only that but you could always hand her down whatever you have now if it's better. I'll probably hand my Pre down to my girlfriend for now since hers is kinda beat up. Then whenever she upgrades we can keep one or both Pres for backups or sell them.
