I needed a little more space on my SD card so I could take some pictures/video of an event I was at recently, so I took my MP3 file off of it and put it on my desktop. The problem is that my SD card has 1.1GB space taken up with... something I can't seem to see. All the files currently on my SD add up to 115MB yet my PC and my Hero both tell me that I only have 775 MB remaining. Then it gets a little worse.

I've formatted the card 4 times now to try get rid of whatever is taking up that 1.1GB of space. It formats fine, I put my music back on and all the folders that were on it originally. I go to my music app and it tells me there's no music found on my SD. I look on my Hero... 1.1GB space taken, 775MB left. My music file is 1.6GB so that makes no sense at all. I plug it back into my PC and the MP3 file isn't even on there even though I put it on myself... 3 times.

Rebooting doesn't work, formatting the card doesn't work and even when I do format it all the files magically reappear once I unmount the SD. Any new ones I put on don't appear at all.

It was all working fine until this morning and I haven't changed anything at all (except I rooted it when I first got it, but there's been no problems up until now) so I'm completely confused as to what's triggered this.

If anyone knows what's going on I'd love to know, thanks.

If it's not formatting then the card (or possibly the handset) must be faulty. Attempting a format via a card reader on your PC would narrow the problem down, or alternatively try another card to see if the problem is replicated.

Well I first tried formatting with the USB, the files appeared to be deleted but reappeared once the card was back in the phone. I took it to college and a friend put it in his laptop to try format it, and failed. He then used a Linux command to format it in a different way than I'm used to and even that didn't work. I guess the SD card is corrupt, which is fantastic since I've had it for 3 weeks and I don't know if T-Mobile will give me a new one.

    Anyway, thanks a bunch.

Hello, I've got the same problem and it's driving me nuts.

I want to change the music on my SD Card. No problem, connect in USB Mode to PC and drag / drop / delete as I see fit within the MP3 folder. Everything looks great, unmount, and go back to phone.

Same original music which I had 'deleted' and 'replaced' still exists. I can play them, and so on. I re-connect to PC and the card looks like it did originally before my updates. OK, try again. Nothing, remains the same.

I right-click and try to format. In Win7 it drops out and says disk is no longer available. In WinXP it goes through a long format process. Incidentally, the card is the original 2gb which was provided with the phone by HTC.

Unmount again, and go back to phone. Formatted? Nope!! Everything still exists. OK, from Settings menu in phone I unmount SD Card. Yip, fine. Then I choose Format. It looks like it's doing it, but when it comes up with "Preparing SD Card" and then completes the same files and capacity / space available remains. Also, on occaision (the Hero repeatedly beeps and lets me know that it's Preparing the SD card, and checking for errors). This will happen over and over again, and then not for days. It does feel a bit like a fault or a faulty card, but wanted to gather views of the forum.

It's driving me nuts! I can take new photos, and am able to delete files, using FileDroid Lite, just not copy music via PC across or format.

    Any ideas?

If the card can be written to and files deleted by third-party software then that suggests the file system on the card itself is okay. My vote is for a hardware fault in the handset.

Yeah I was concerned about that. However looking at the files again, perhaps FileDroid didn't manage a delete. It's a problem others have experienced too so likely. I've orderwd a new card as I wanted larger capacity anyway. Will let you know if the problem persists.
