Problems with Galaxy S and Samsung Kies

I am a 76 yo pensioner, tearing out what's left of my thinning hair, because every time I've taken some photographs and try to copy them onto my computer, the Kies programme takes ages to recognise my phone, then uploads every photo on the computer onto the phone!
IS THERE A SIMPLE METHOD OF CONNECTING THE PHONE VIA USB TO THE COMPUTER AND COPYING JUST THE RECENT SNAPS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL ME.
I love the phone, but am baffled by the wording used. Is KIES a load of dog's doo-doo?

Your advice will be appreciated and may save me having another heart attack!
