Why everyone is upgrading their firmware?
What is wrong with the default version? it lagged the phone or bugged or sth?
    My galaxy default firmware:
    Android v2.1 update 1
    I9000XXJF3
Is it we must manually update firmware?
What will happen if we update it will my phone brick if i fail?

Can someone kindly clear my doubts ty.

Like in any product, early firmware versions have a few bugs and kinks that need to be ironed out, in this case the galaxy S is no exception to the rule. the newer firmwares take care of those things, mostly they make the phone snappier and takes care of a few issue, for example there have been a few improvements with respect to the GPS software in the later iterations of the firmware.

That being said, though they have released for developers, Samsung has not quite been very speedy in updating the firmware through conventional means. So a few of us that don't feel like waiting to the official release of the updates, go ahead and flash our devices.

If you are happy with the way your phone is running, then I suggest you just wait for the official release. Flashing the phone can be kinda nerve-wrecking, if you want to do it you should read up well, follow the videos and always keep a cool head if something goes wrong, odds are that it isn't as bad as it looks. I tried to flash mine and failed several times because of the wrong .pit file. But I was lucky enough to get some help from this dude in another thread, now I feel very comfortable flashing the phone.

anyway, the decision is entirely up to you

my galaxy s is lagging(when i press application and back to home) is it because of its firmware? Are you having any lagging issue before you update the firmware?

shaun, everyone gets this laging issue after a while of use, jm2 addresses this. however reports are that with the recomended fix one still gets better results, so the problem is still not fully solved in jm2.

From Austalia with JF3 firmware with optus icons in the app screen
I am chicken to do flash. I am pretty noob at this stuff

I love the phone so much but the task panel (task manager) was not doing a good job. When i want to show off the phone it will start to lag. I dont want embarrass Samsung. Cant wait till 2.2 is out.

I decided to go to youtube and check out how to flash.

and decided to go with the JM2
Man it makes a different. On the home you will see a task manager and if you hold the center button you will also see task manager as well.

The phone does not seem to lag any more. Task manager is heaps better than the android app stores. It seems to keep the important things running and the not so important in the task manager so it can be closed manually. I am impressed.

also you will nottice on the slide down screen there is a gps button to turn on and off. GPS detects satelite faster and locks the signal as well.

But I am wanting to try the mimocan lag fix as well but i will need to buy a new sd card.
P.S make sure you write down the APN settings so you dont lose your mms and mobile internet. And use Kies to backup contacts.

What they said. I'm the sort of idiot who whenever I get a new device I try to tweak it so that it does just what I want how I want it. I had endless problems when I first tried flashing the phone, but thanks to the good people here and on the XDA Developers forum I was able to iron out any errors and have now flashed my phone several times to keep up with the latest firmware releases.

The result - my phone is lightning fast, GPS works better, there's a few extra bells and whistles in the UI. The original phone, out of the box, was great - now it's superb.

Sorry I should also say if you want the optus logo. upgrading it will remove them. I have no idea how to get them back but i think there are forums going on to teach you how to get them back. I am with three anyway and downloaded the app for that. I have no idea how to get them back and you need to go to menu and select swipe again to have it working again. I panic when I didn't see swype. The lock screen you really need to drag more distance compare to the JF3.
JF3 was nasty firmware for me.

I tell you guys how the mimican lag fix upgrade goes next week. I am going to get a class 6 sd card. Im not sure if you need to get that speed but might as well get the best. To be honest I dont know what I am doing. But I will tell you the fate of my SGS next week. It might be a Samsung comet brick. Pray for me lol. My english isnt good so reading the steps I will have friends that will help me.
Wish there was a youtube clip for this.

good luck. As for the SD card a class 6 is advisable if you want to store HD videos on the fly on it.

I dont think they will update to the latest firmware that we are using. Because I think its a firmware for somewhere in Europe. Maybe the latest firmware for Singapore galaxy. I think Samsung Singapore get faster updates compare to most countries.

Anyways i did the Mimocan fix and i dont really notice the difference compare to stock JM2 firmware

I did a speed test and only got 1117 in quadrant. I didnt test it before the fix which I should of done. Everyone else is getting 1777+
I think I've done something wrong or i am using a class 4 Sony micro sd. Where everyone else is getting rapid speed with the standard Sandisk brand.

Well I will now try round 2 with a sandisk and tell you guys how it goes.

My biggest problem, with my line of work I simply do not have the time to read up on what files I need, what to install on both the PC & Galaxy S and how to do it all....

One of my former assistant surgeons who has an Android said he would do it all for me... This however now can not be done as he's just left for the States on a 2yr switch program.
