Hey, so i am fairly new to android. Ive had my droid eris for around two or three months now. I came from an env2. I really like this phone a lot.. the apps, being able to browse the internet or check my facebook, everything. I was one of the users that jumped the gun and installed the first and second leak of 2.1.. That's when the problems of installing an unfinished os came. Im so sick of doing the airplane trick and my phone still dies in five hours. Im sick of the dialer lag, or half of my phone calls not even having sound. Im sick of being here and xda everyday looking for an ota or another tweak our option that will help improve my performance on the eris. also my trackball has stopped working. So yesterday i went into a verizon wireless store and bitched about all this. They told me that they would send me a new one that should be here tomorrow. Since i didn't use my new every two for this phone i still have that option. I was wondering what some of your opinions are. Should sell the new eris and get an incredible. Should i root the new one and hope I dont have the same issues with custom roms. I have been leaning towards getting an inedible because of much faster specs and official 2.1.. But then im stuck with it for two years. When 4g phones could be next for verizon is that wise?

    Thanks, sam

IMHO, I wouldn't jump into the incredible just yet. I would wait until it's been out for a little bit to make sure there are no big issues with it. Best bet is to get the new eris and either keep it stock or root. From what I hear, at least with root you can go back to stock. Personally I've been real happy with the leaked v2 but I understand that there have been some with major issues.

Imo the speed and an official 2.1 os is not worth paying the extra money for. Now don't get me wrong, i just sent back my eris yesterday and will be getting the incredible when it comes out. But i have other reasons which rooting the eris would not solve, at least not right now. The biggest issue for me was the space available for apps. I didn't have any issues with lag or the speed of the phone, and i was rooted so i was running the 2.1 os already. If you just want a speed boost i suggest rooting your phone and wait for the next smartphone to come out. Rooting will resolve a good number of issues, it does a much better job of managing its memory and things feel much quicker in general compared to 1.5.

So if i root and choose a good custom rom it will fix a lot of the issues i was having? Is this confirmed? Will the time without a signal bug be fixed? And the every other call not having sound bug?

I can't answer the root question since I'm not rooted but I believe the issues you are referring to are strictly leaked version issues. If you're seriously considering rooting I would check out the eris rooted section and find out what kind of issues, if any, they are having.

I agree, it is sexy! But I'm one that really likes to wait for something to be out and let other people be the guinea pigs.:D You're in a great position though IMO, since you don't have a contract right now.

Phone is def sexy looking, but like you mentioned 4g phones should be coming out soon and if you waste your 2 year on the incredible you will have that for 2 years instead of being able to get your 4g phone when it comes out. If it were me I would keep the new eris root it then wait and see what sick ass 4g phones come out.

I thought about waiting for 4g before I upgraded to the Eris but there is one unanswered question about 4g... What is verizon going to charge for it? Even Sprint is going to charge more for 4G.

Thats true, but lets hope it wont be to much more for 4g because the 3g prices are already ridiculous if you ask me.

If I am not mistaken, Verizon Wireless will not have a 4G phone until summer 2011, and who knows how widespread LTE will be by then? Also, who knows which handsets will get it first? If you do a NE2 right now, you will be eligible again in 20 months - that would be December 2011.

    Good points.

@ lilbballer27: Remember there is a 30 day return policy as well. If you get the incredilble and don't like it you can return it and go back to your Eris.

All good points and helpful. Ill still have to see if i can sell the eris for like $200. I weight wanna spend more money for the incredible. But if i can sell the eris and have enough for it with my ne2 then I just might do it.

If I'm not wrong, Sprint's technology is going to be different from the other Big Three US carriers. That can't be good. If I'm not wrong, again, I believe WiMAX and LTE are different, and that's what will set Spring apart from the rest. And I think I read that it would be in a bad way. So... proceed with caution.

I must have missed your 5 hour battery issue. Do you live an area with shoddy coverage?

That's not normal. Have you tried returning the phone or requesting a new battery because of this? You don't need to tweak your phone that much to get a day's worth out of it.

yeah the dorm room I live in is in an area that gets very bad service and on top of that i live in the basement. I have to walk around my room holding my phone in the air to send a text message. To make a call i stick my head out my windows.

And yes when I went in to the verizon store the five hour issue was something i complained about. They were very good about sending me a new phone. I made sure to go to a busy store. I think my trackball not moving to one side is what really worked out for me. The guy tried playing with it and took the battery out and rebooted. When that didnt work he just said that he could ship me a new one.

Sounds like your 5 hour battery issue has more to do with where you spend your time. All the cool things stuff on any Android phone involves your phone constantly looking for, finding and using signals. If it's time to do a fb update, it will keep going til it gets it, even with a poor connection, and therefore suck your battery life FAST. As long as you're living like that, you may want to turn off your auto update stuff and save some battery life.

Erises on ebay and craigslist (Denver) are going for around $200 - $300 right now. I'm guessing when the Incredible comes out that number will drop.

You have coverage issues. Does it work fine on campus and anywhere else outside your dorm?

Either way, you may need to switch carriers. I could be wrong, but I don't think a new phone will be able to reach a different tower and possibly make your signal better. Anyone on your floor have a VZW phone that works fine?
