Question and response from Samsung re microSD card max capacity.Support

    So, here is the question I asked:

    Hi. There is much confusion about the maximum capacity of micro SD card that the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet will accept. I have found one Samsung site that specifies 64gb and the User Manual quotes this also. However, I have found other Samsung sites that say 32gb and the spec on products sold by amazon.co.uk says this too. Can you clarify, once and for all, what the maximum capacity of external SD card is? Thank you.

    And here is the response, which came quite quickly:

    I thought you'd respond to this Loren!

    My question was sent to Samsung UK, using a 'contact us' link on their website. Perhaps someone would try asking my question of Samsung US to see if they agree.

    I was bummed I thought it was 64 also.

    I just read this, with the new update there should be full support:

    Now, the OTA improvement comes with KeyBoard pop-up issue fixed, landscape option included to S-Note, pal zoom bug in S-Note resolved, exFAT Fix – 64 GB microSD cards now supported, S-Note scroll bar included for being used when needed. The upgrade has 75 MB, so it is just a minor improvement to the stock ROM of your Galaxy Note 10.1. For being able to receive it, your tablet must have internet connection enabled or WiFi connection. All you have to do is to the Settings menu and choose to download and install the OTA update. Take note that the carrier might charge you for that.

    I have been using 64GB uSD since day one on mine and have no idea what the whole discussion is about. 64GB cards have been working on Android for a year at least and manufacturers only try to cover their backs in case of problems.

    The whole is about file system used on the card. We used to have to use FAT32, now exFAT gets more and more support.

    Why even start a thread like this if multiple threads have been created where people said they used 64GB?

    Onr thing to remember:

    NEVER TRUST CALL CENTRE/ CUSTOEMR SERVICE.

    I used to call customer service for fun and ask a difficult question and then call back in 5 minutes, just to get to another person and get yet another answer. The third call meant another version of the answer.

    People who work there are neither IT, nor Android experts and only use a script that tells them what to do in case of a specific problem. I have seen people working at an IT helpdesk for 2 years and when I told them to go to Device Manager, they did not know what that was. That just proves my point.

    Well i have tried 2 different 64 gb cards in my 10.1, both did not work on my unit, i tried formatting in all sorts of differnet ways, i really wanted 64gb as well, i now learn after all that messing and sending my cards back that a fw update might fix it :(

    i dont have the new fw yet either, mine says i have the latest version already

    hbryder - thanks a lot for that link. It's looking positive on the 64gb format front. It's the first time I've read anything about the contents of an OTA update - where do you get that sort of info anyway?

    James - if you still have a 64gb card, please keep trying for the OTA update and let us know if you get it and it lets you format the card in the tab. Have you tried updating using Kies? Maybe it will be more successful that way.

    You are still talking about exFAT. That is what the update was for. On FAT32 all cards work with or without the update.

    I bought a Sandisk 64gb card, no problems at all, works straight out of the packet without any formatting.

    Samsung customer service is a joke specially if you call from UK then you get connected to Cairo in Egypt. Those people don't know anything. They put you on hold as soon as you asked question. Then take a ***an/toilet break few 5 to 10 minutes. Then try. to bluff. You say that is not the answer they get angry and tell us that their answer correct. If you say anything they put you on hold and take another break for 5 to 10 minutes or they disconnect th call.

    As with almost all Tech. support it's just hit and miss with Samsung Tech. support, if you get a good Tech. support person who wants to help you your lucky.:rolleyes: I have called Samsung Tech.support from the USA and they have tried to give me correct answers, but many times they just did not know the correct answer. And what I did get from them was wrong.:(

    I too bought a 64GB SD card and it appeared to work straight out of the package. However, I made the mistake of loading stuff off my laptop on to the card. This I am told by an assistant in John Lewis is why the card will now not mount. I don't know where he got this info from. I have now bought one of those gizmos that enable a USB drive to be connected to the tab. Stuff loads OK to the card by this route, but still the card will not mount. The same person in John Lewis now tells me I must now format the card. All the foregoing is, apparently, to do with anti-piracy. Shoot me now.

    Well, that sound very unlikely to me. But what do I know?

    Could you explain exactly what you mean by that. I'm confused by "Stuff loads OK to the card by this route, but still the card will not mount."
