Rather than creating threads for the purpose of answering small questions, this thread should be used by members to ask questions, and get quick responses. I this it would be really is useful because, often we have a lot of new members, or even regular posters who make threads for the smallest and often easiest questions to be answered. This way, we can keep the forums clean, and continue to have larger discussion threads, while still answers the needs of those who wish to ask specific questions.

(Please answer questions by quoting the original question, followed by your answer.)

    Now for my question:

I'm a new member and I have a quick question about the voice and data plans for the Motorola Droid. I wanted to get the Select Plan w/ 450 minutes (39.99) and add on the Smart phone plan with Unlimited Data Usage (44.99). If I get the Unlimited Data Usage Plan, will I be covered for unlimited text messaging? I'm a heavy texter and I don't think I will survive with Verizon's 5,000 Text Messaging Add-On Plan, either. If someone could please clear this up for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty sure you are going to need a texting plan. It appears that VZ doesnt have an unlimited texting plan. I thought they used to. Is this more nickle and dime stuff by Big Red? 5000 out of network and unlimited in for 20 a month when it used to be 20 a month for truly unlimited?

I have unlimited texting for 4 phones. And the data plan is $29.99 unless you are a business buying the phone. I don't think unlimited texting comes with the data plan. I have the family on the select plan which includes unlimited texting.

Oh, my gosh. This is so confusing.

So, since I've got the select plan, I get unlimited messaging and if I want to use data such as E-Mail, IM, Web, etc, I will have to get the Smart Phone plan?

    Good idea.

My question: How do I choose multiple recipients to send txt messages to from the droid? Or from google voice?

It's my understanding that you have to get the data plan with the Droid. And that includes unlimited e-mail, im, web, etc...

No, absurdly enough, the unlimited data plan does NOT include texting.

My best advice is to go to vzw.com/signin and set up your online access. Then you can check and see exactly what plan you have and what it covers. On the left side of the page there is a box with three tabs. The first shows how many voice minutes you are signed up for, the second shows how many text messages and the third shows how much data access.

Okay, so I think I've got it now.

I'll get the Select Plan - 450 Minutes for 49.99, which will include the Unlimited Texting.
Then, I will add on the Smart Phone Plan, which is 29.99 and pay that monthly.

So, it should average to about 75 dollars a month?

Thanks to all who helped me!

    Feel free to ask questions.

    (A mod should sticky this)

You want the Select 450 plan (which is $59.99 and not $39.99) and the $44.99 Corporate Data Plan.

The Select Plan includes unlimited text, so you're all set to go.

    1. Can you have a separate wallpaper for lock screen and a different one for the three home screens? If so how do you do it?

    2. How do you create a custom playlist in the music app? I think it has to be done on PC inside of the sd card but I'm not sure.

    Mhmm.

But, I don't want the corporate plan, I want the smart phone plan.

    What's the difference, anyway?

Well I was just repeating what you said to be sure that's what you wanted. The Corporate plan includes a lot of stuff most of us don't need: "Synchronize your mobile PDA or Smartphone to your PC with PDA/Smartphone from Verizon Wireless, providing over-the-air synchronization of e-mail, contacts, calendar, and tasks. Service available within the NationalAccess or, with certain devices, the Mobile Broadband service area." It sounds pretty much like it includes Exchange and such.

So what you want is the Select 450 and the Personal Data Plan which is $59.99 + $29.99... I think you mistook the Basic 450 for the Select 450 because the Basic 450 Plan is $39.99.

Yeah, I got totally confused and yes, exactly. This is exactly what I want. Now, I gotta pitch the idea to my Father.

So, it'll be around 95-100 dollars a month? Gosh, that's a lot of money, but Verizon is a really good carrier.

    Thanks for your help.
Just like the Individual Plan, I believe you have to get a Family Select Plan...

Someone posted the exact response from a Verizon rep regarding the data plan. The answer was that a consumer would get the $29.99 plan. The $44.99 plan is for businesses that purchase the phones for their employees. The explanation is that there is no difference in what each plan can do. I think they charge corporations/businesses more because they just figure that they will be using the higer level of data usage.

I can assure you they don't just charge businesses more because they can. There is a difference and that difference lies in Exchange. With Exchange business users can just sync all their emails with it and that's what companies want for their employees. And I believe it's syncs automatically and is active all the time so yes, that would use more data. But no, the higher cost isn't "just for fun." :p

    1. Why are the home screen icons so far apart? The screen is similar in size to the iPhone but the icons are so far apart. They could fit at least another row of icons on a screen. If you have the Google search at the top, you can only fit 12 icons on the that home screen. If they expect you to be able to able to hit the keys on the vertical keyboard, as close together as they are, they should be able to put icons closer together. This is my biggest complaint so far. Are there any apps/themes that allow for more icons? I know it has multiple home screens, but I mostly use the middle one.

    2. I get double notified about emails. Once via the Gmail application and once via the built-in email application. What are some options to remedy this? Do I need to remove one of the apps?

Thank you very much in Advance :)

#2-You can remove the account in the regular email application (it won't let you remove it in gmail) or just turn notifications off in one or the other.

I can assure you that you dont know what you are talking about.

IF YOU GET A SMART PHONE FROM VERIZON ALL YOU NEED IS THE $29.99 DATA PLAN. FORGET ABOUT THE $44.99 PLAN YOU DONT NEED IT. EVERYTHING YOU WOULD NEED (INTERNET, EMAIL, EXCHANGE) IS INCLUDED IN THE $29.99 DATA PLAN.
