is there a quick way to silence any ringtone or notification on the phone. when your in a public place and suddenly your phone is the loudest thing on earth....i'd like to be able to push a button or do something that makes it immediately stop. with my blackberry i pushed the buttons on the side (volume buttons) and it made it stop. i can't figure it out on the hero. TIA

For ringing, flip your phone face down... not sure this works for a text, but I'm also not sure I could do it fast enough to make a difference when a text came in, since the notification is so short.

Pushing either volume button on the side of the phone stops the ringtone on a call for me (I just tried it again to make sure). Don't know why it wouldn't work on yours.

As the previous poster pointed out, flipping the phone so the screen is down also works.

To add on to this question, what is the name of a good "silence" widget that I can put on my home screen (similar to the wifi and mobile toggle buttons). So I dont have to hold the red button and hit silence. Thanks!

I use Ringer Toggle Widget. It works pretty well. Every once in a while it doesn't respond to taps, but mostly it works really well. You can find it here: Ringer Toggle Widget for Android - AndroidZoom.com

thank you for your responses. i put custom text tones for my sms messages and they don't seem to stop when i push anything (altho i will have to try once more just to verify).

i guess i could take the custom tones off for sms messsages, but then i seem to miss them!
