I have just placed my beloved blackberry 8900 from tmobile on hiatus, and just paid out $330 (after tax) for this SOB that is the HTC EVO.

Someone please explain, why I did not do this sooner? :[

I will however, without a question miss my BBM lightning fast communication and the durability of the blackberry, as well as the keyboard.. but the grass is always greener on the other side, so I am very happy with my purchase.

I am wondering however, if someone can giude me on this dillema.
    - I love the HTC sense skin, but i dont want sprint TV, AMAzon, Facebook(im against FB), etc. What is the best way for me to keep my settings, emials, pictures, and Sense while removing the bloatware that is FB and Amazon.

I also just did the FPS update, and It seems to me, the phone is running a little smoother (not night and day difference, but much smoother, nonetheless)

Finally, I want to be able to downclock my CPU when the screen is off, but I cant find a good answer if I will be able to keep Sense UI.

This may just be the device that will replace my friends... SOrry friends, but my Evo is my fiance now!

    1. Are you rooted?
    2. All your questions have answers if you are rooted, if you are not rooted then u are sol until you root.

I am asking for opinions on the best, and easiest (for a newb like me) way to root so I keep Sense and gain ability to remove the trash apps. I understand that unrevoked doesnt actually allow you to remove sprint apps. ALso, I downloaded unrevoked to my evo, OTA , but it kept saying "Faaaauuk, couldnt create a marker"....

If I read you correctly, you like Sense and want to keep it. No problem. Removing the pre-installed bloatware is pretty straightforward once you've fully rooted your phone. I recommend using the latest unrevoked. unrevoked. Very painless full root. Finally.

The bloatware is installed in the /system folder on your phone, which is an area that requires root access to write to. Once you're rooted, you can go into the phone's filesystem and delete the apps you don't want.

When fully rooted, you will be able to throttle down your CPU. This ability does not affect whether or not you are running Sense or not. So you're all good there. If these are your only requirements from rooting, then I recommend that you use a rooted stock ROM, which will look just like a factory Evo, except you have root abilities. Then I would flash (install) a custom kernel on top of that stock ROM, so you get the ability to throttle your CPU, among other things.

I believe you have outdated information. Previous versions of unrevoked were not full roots: meaning NAND remained locked. With NAND locked, even if you have root permission, the bootloader security kicks in and prevents you from writing to /system areas.

There's a very new version of unrevoked, v3.21, that gives you a full root (NAND unlocked). Make sure that's the one you are using. The vast majority of people who've used this have had no problems rooting. If you are running into issues, make sure you read the instructions carefully and that you've taken care of any prerequisites (like installing HBOOT drivers), etc.

I would also recommend that you read the articles in the stickied thread in this subforum. This will give you a better idea of what rooting is and what abilities it gives you.

I suggest you go to XDA Developers and look at all the ROMs there. Read through and see what meets your needs and wants. Also, check out PPCGeeks. They have quite a few ROMs there too. Most ROMs will keep Sense, if they dont you will plainly see where it says "Sense-less" or "non-Sense" ROM.

SetCPU will allow you to underclock your CPU when your screen is off. It is available in the Market and well worth the $2 that it cost!!

After you're rooted - you want Fresh Rom.

All crap apps removed, and stock Sense overlay is left untouched.
