There are almost as many "ideal" kernels as there are Droids. What works well for my Droid may crash yours. Use the rooting guide, watch the videos, I recommend Bugless Beast 0.4 as a great 2.2 ROM (others will recommend other ROMs). Take your time, do everything on a FULL BATTERY CHARGE and backup, backup, backup!

    Good Luck! :)

Insanne beat me to it but the topic called all things root related is a great start. The way I rooted my friends 2.1 Droid is ..

I dl'd RSD lite (the 32 bit version for me, not sure about yours)
I dl'd the 2.1 SBF with the custom recovery (SPRecovery)

Then I used RSD lite to flash the 2.1 SBF onto the droid. (search youtube, I think there's a video tutorial for RSD Lite and the Droid)

After that, then you can start choosing your custom rom that has root access. I, also, use BB 0.4.

I know it's not very detailed but I think this is a good start for you.

    Have fun.
