The idea of them using an Android phone is a really nice change of pace from the way Defense procurement used to be. I remember doing a GPS comparison years ago at an Army base I used to work on. We compared a Garmin GPS to an uncoded PLGR (Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver). The PLGR was 4 times the size, weighed a whole lot more, and literally cost 10x what the Garmin GPS cost.

Custom devices may have certain benefits over off-the-shelf but the cost difference is staggering...

That's because Android phones are for porn.
