Okay so this is what I've gathered so far from my new phone (in merlot). As of right now... I honestly want to throw it thru the window. Now I know that I just received it yesterday and I need to give the phone the benefit of the doubt especially since it hasn't even debuted yet to the tmobile stores. Yet there are some issues I'm having with the phone that I can't seem to overlook.

    1. Signal strength. In my neighborhood I normally have 3 out of 4 bars of strength, in fact all my phones including the Tmobile G1, signal strength was not an issue. With this phone, I don't know how many times I have lost signal strength and I lose it for minutes at a time, not seconds, minutes............. and this all in my home.

    2. Lagging on phone. Trying to pull off ANYTHING on this phone is pretty much close to impossible in regards to opening up applications in a timely manner. I became so damn agitated with the phone I decided to actually time how long it took to open a application (contacts), it took 10 seconds... on my G1 it took 2 seconds. Now mind you this was before I even started adding on other applications to the phone. This was it coming out the box, charging it at full capacity and just dropping my sim card in. Now i know some people are like 5 seconds big deal...... okay I want you to sit at a table doing nothing else but just looking at the phone and count 10 seconds.....that's a long time.

    3. Physical keyboard. Okay so sue me, i miss my keyboard with real buttons and the speed i had to go along with it. This touch screen texting mess has really been a challenge, i don't know how many times i have backspaced today. Yes I enjoy my touch screen when using it in general, but using it to text? Hell I didn't like the feature when it was an upgrade on the G1, I still preferred sliding on the keyboard. Oh well I'll try to work at it.

    4. Internal memory. Now I know that the memory in the mytouch is an improvement over the G1, but when is it EVER gonna hit over 1 GB? Unless there is a HUGE update to root the external memory card to allow apps to run from it....then to me we are still gonna have issues. The only phone I know of that will have alot of internal memory to play with "supposedly" is the Samsung Galaxy, yet tmobile has yet to pick that up.

Overall my expectations for this phone have definitely not been met. Yet I do recall when I first received my G1 back in January, within 2 weeks I had gone thru 4 of them because of technical issues. Hopefully nothing so drastic will happen with this phone, but an update of some sort to just getting the OS operating smoothly is definitely needed in my opinion.

I love the Android platform and think it is kicks ass, but right now it's getting it's ass kicked because this phone is just not functioning at the capacity it has the potential to be at..Yet again it all comes back to the point that I was fortunate enough to get the phone earlier than the release date and of course there will always be bugs when something first comes out and hopefully with time it will definitely prove to be a formidable foe in this ever going and growing battle of smartphone platforms. From a loyal Tmobile customer of over 6 years with my own honest opinion.

Have you tried swapping it out? You might have a defective unit (similar to what you might have experienced with the G1). I have a MT3G and haven't experience any of the issues you listed in the first two points.

You can also try the HTC Keyboard, which I have loaded on mine. It greatly improves the accuracy of typing vs. the stocked version. Follow the instructions below:

    - Download "appmanager" onto your phone from the market
    - Download HTC_IME onto your computer from here
    - Connect your phone to your computer (make sure USB debugging mode is on)
    - On the phone, pull down the notification bar and click the USB message to "mount" your sd card
    - Move the HTC_IME file (unzipped) onto your sd card
    - Disconnect
    - Open appmanager
    - Hit menu --> Install from SD --> menu --> Whole SD
    - Select HTC_IME and accept the installation instructions

I've had mine for about 1.5 months. And when I was at your moment in time, I was pretty ready to go back to my G1 as well. Give yourself a week, and install the HTC_IME keyboard and you'll fall head over heals for it. Once your fingers get accommodated to all touch screen, youll never go back.

I'm jealous you got the Merlot, I wanted that but got black instead. Oh well, free is free :)

Edit: Get a new SIM card. I know it's weird that you're only having issues on the MyTouch, but swapping out for a new one should fix your issues.

You have to go to Settings -> Locale & Text and enable Touch Input. Then you go into a program (not widget) with a text field and long hold that text field until it gives you a menu and you can switch your input method from there.

Vdubb - thanks for the keyboard tips, i like it a lot better than the original keyboard that came with the mytouch3g. the only thing i wish i could disable is the auto-complete feature when hitting the space bar without disabling the word suggestion feature. either way, i like this keyboard much better.

msjazz79 - sorry to hear about your problems so far. i've had the phone for about a week now and just wanted to let you know i have not been experiencing the lag you mention.

as for signal strength, i get similar signal strength compared to my curve at home but signal seems to fluctuate a lot. for example, ill have 4 bars 3g then it drops to 2 bars. this does this on wifi as well, i am standing 5 ft from my router and i have full wifi signal then i start using the phone and it drops to 1 bar then back to 2 bars. also, it seems that the phone doesnt immediately recognize my wifi network when i get home so i have to turn wifi on and off and it eventually connects. my wifi network name is hidden but i figure it shouldnt matter since the network is saved in my phone. this is my first android phone so i am not sure if the g1 was like this or if other mytouch owners have had the same experience with signal strength.

being able to install apps onto the sd card would be awesome.

    overall i love this phone.

I'm slightly confused as to why you upgraded to a phone which is basically the same as the G1 just without the physical keyboard that you professed to love.

Got mine as well and don't have any of these issues. I think you have a defective unit as well. Sounds like you are gonna have to do the exchange thing like your G1 fiasco! Sorry!
I will admit that the keyboard thing is a hurdle but give it time, or try the HTC, I just dealt with the preloaded and have gotten used to it.
My biggest hurdle is the word suggestion thing mentioned in a reply below in this post.

Bets of luck, I hope you know you were my first post in this forum!!

Any resolution to the auto complete thing? I hate this as well, can't tell you how many times I have typed the correct word in full and spaced a suggested without looking until I reread the text and realize I have to edit!!! Arghhh! Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    1. There should be no signal difference between your g1 and your mytouch - you have a defective phone.

    2. Lagging? My mytouch screams through apps. As a comparison, I clicked on contacts, and it took less than .5 seconds to open, as upposed to the g1, which always took me 2 to 3 seconds. The reasoning behind this? The mytouch has more memory, which = faster processing. If your mytouch is slower than your g1, you have a defective phone.

    3. You knew you were getting a phone with just a virtual keyboard. You will just have to get use to it.

    4. You knew you bought a phone with limited internal memory. Someday there will be an android phone with many gigs of internal. Someday, not now.

CONCLUSION; your phone is defective, period. Call tmobile and trade it in.

ewood - i just decided to enable Prediction, Spell Correction, and Word Completion. When i type an abbreviated word that is not in the dictionary, i select it when it shows in the auto complete section and it gets added to the word list. That way, next time i type the word it will show up highlighted in the auto complete list. Its a little extra work up front, but no big deal.

how is everyone's wifi and 3g signal consistency? the wifi and 3g signal strength on my phone fluctuates a lot.

    Hi guys,

I just got the myTouch on Saturday (3 days ago). Everything has been fine, but at my home signal strength is dramatically different than my past phone. I had a Samsung slider (nothing smart) and I used to get full or close to full strength. With the MyTouch I'm getting 3 out of 4 bars, but it will drop all the way to "No Service" from time to time. I tried with the wifi on and off in case it was interferring. I also had Edge connectivity last night, but not today.

Are other people having this issue? I'm about to travel to the Tmobile store and check with them. I have 14 days to return the phone... I love it, but if I can't send and receive calls, it's pointless.

Welcome to the AF forums and enjoy your visits !!

You can take two steps at times and change your reception ... it is not a stable thing ... coverage is an issue with any carrier .... and is not necessarily an issue with the phone ..

I agree with dajobo, i think you may have received a defective unit. I had similar issues with an old Motorola Q, terrible reception and very laggy, it ended up being a defective unit. The defective Q also lasted 2 hours a day before i had to plug it in to recharge the battery. Take it back and ask for a new unit.

My G2 is fast and the reception is identical to my wife's G1. You may have a bad unit. Try to do a reset of all data first and see if that helps. Also, I tired the HTC keyboard which is good but Touchpal worked the best for me. I even tried the voice to text but it was cluncky to use in applications. The new update should have voice to text in all apps so the keyboard will see less use.

One of the previous posters hit the nail on the head: SIM card.

I had mine changed and it's totally different now.

Whew! I was worried about that one. I'm about to get a mytouch after just
selling my LG Incite (with WinMo). The Incite was soooo laggy and slow, I
don't want to go through that again!

    1. Please don't automatically assume you can simply come up with a solution based on antenna strength, there might have been plenty good reasons for me not having good signal strength with the MyTouch vs. my G1.

    2. Don't ever assume that more memory = faster processing, only a fool would think that, both the G1 and Mytouch BOTH HAVE Qualcomm 528 MHz processors, that means THEY BOTH RUN AT 528 MHz. This was also confirmed with a HTC employee at their headquarters at

    HTC America
    13920 SE Eastgate Way,
    Suite 400
    Bellevue, Washington 98005
    Tel: 425-679-5318

    3. I know the phone has a virtual keyboard, I have friends who also have phones with virtual keyboards and don't have issues, unfortunately for me that wasn't the case, I wanted to try it out and it didnt work for me.

    4. I also know that I bought a phone with limited memory, you don't think I didn't know that? Sometimes I wonder if you actually READ my post, I know that it will be sometime before a phone over 1 GB comes out but eventually it will be in the future.

CONCLUSION: Do more HOMEWORK on the subject at hand before you come up with a B*ll-shi*t answer.

    Thanx;)
