No idea how you can do it and get it direct, but if nothing else, you could make a backup, delete all the icons from the desktop, then screenshot each section. Then you can stitch them back together on your computer and restore your backup.
I have used it to successfully recover deleted jpeg files from memory cards. Deleted files are often still there (unless they have been overwritten) it's just the directory structure for finding them that is gone. Of course, the more recently the file was deleted, the more likely you;ll be able to recover it. No guarantees, but it's definitely worth a try.
OK, now I feel "less dumb" for not being able to find it (where the wallpaper is stored). You'd think it would be an easy and obvious location. (I see someone later in the thread posted a solution, I'll have to check it out).
After having this problem for my self a couple of times I created the app Wallpaper Saver which automatically backs up your wallpaper and lets you send your current and previous wallpapers to your email.
It's free. You can download it from Google Play.
It's called: Wallpaper Saver https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.alroe.apps.WallpaperSaverFree
