I am a noob at rooting, but I have some experience with computers.
So far I am stuck at step 8 in the manual rooting steps. When I type in the recovery boot, I don't enter into recovery mode. Instead, all I see is nothing but the white HTC, standing there unless I take the battery out and boot it back to regular OS. Do I have to hold home button and power button, immediately after I enter -recovery boot? and what button is the power button to make sure?

I know I did the first few steps of the inputing codes correctly, but how do I know I flashed my recovery image 1.6.2 correctly? When I typed into cmd: flash_image recovery recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img

I immediately got that # sign below it. Do i have to wait for a minute or so before doing recovery boot? I know I pushed my recovery to my SD correctly, it says the kilobytes on the cmd screen and can find it on SD memory.

I would greatly appreciate your help my fellow phandroids.

And one more thing" I typed in both these codes as written: adb push recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img /sdcard and flash_image recovery recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img throughout the rooting process. Does it matter if I put a "c" after "hero" in both of those codes, because when I do, I get no file and directory error. And the reason I took out the "c" was because my file was named, recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2, originally when I downloaded it, so that is probably why I got the error of no file directory when I added a "c" after hero in those coding inputs.

The power button is the red button, the "end" key.

As for the recovery image issue, do you have a "with Google" phone? You can determine this by looking at the back of it, and it will say "with Google." I know some people have issues with flashing certain recovery images. If you verified that the recovery image is on your card, and you followed the commands correctly, it should flash properly. If you want, you can try recovery image 1.2.3 instead, then upgrade to the 1.6.2 after you are finished.

Something else that caught my attention was you saying you are stuck on step 8. Is that a typo? The recovery process isn't until step 18. After you enter the flash command, it will return the # sign as you say yours did.

As for the "c" that pertained to that specific recovery image. Make sure yours is relevant to how your image is named.

I would suggest going through it again, copy and paste the commands (don't type them as this leaves room for error). You mentioned recovery boot (the command is reboot recovery). Also, try the 1.2.3 recovery image, link is around here somewhere.

Lastly, when you type reboot recovery, don't touch your phone, you shouldn't be pressing any buttons then. Reboot recovery is the command that makes your phone boot into recovery.

Yes, I have the With Google sign on the back of my sprint htc hero. Alright, later today I'll try a different recovery image 1.2.3, and I meant "reboot recovery", sorry for my typo there. And Ill redo it again and probably also use mystic mead's file a," since my phone is CDMA, I guess. I'll give you the results later today. Thanks for replying guys.

Note: Mystic head's file contains the c after hero. So I think i picked the wrong recovery image which had the same filename except it didnt have a "c" after hero.

My phone never did reboot to recovery on my 1st rooting and flashing recovery. I had to manually boot to recovery. It would just reboot normally. I'm not saying that yours will do the same, but if it does, it is not a big deal. Just boot to the recovery image manually.

I am on step 18 (coding) in the manual root, which I have to type in: flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img, and I am using the file the person gave me above, which is the heroc 1.6.2 img.

I get mtd:read error at 00000x000000 (out of memory) repeated several times but leads to the # sign. Should I continue on? or is there something wrong before I type in reboot recoveryA

Good news! I used the 1.5.2 image mem_reddog gave me and it worked. I went to the green text area after I typed in the reboot recovery and made my nandroid, and copied it to my computer. How do I reboot to recovery directly using cmd? so I can wipe. Every time I turn off my phone and hold the home button while pressing the power button, I am led to an area where it says Clear date: yes or no

Do i need to wipe if I am going to install damage control 2.08?

To boot into recovery using cmd line do the following:

Plug phone into usb, open cmd prompt, cd to your sdk/tools directory.

    adb remount
    adb shell
    reboot recovery

hmm. I got to the recovery mode place, but I am trying to wipe Dalvik-cache and SD: ext partition, but I get the error: Run "wipe dalvik' via adb and error:run 'wipe ext' via adb. How do I do that?

Mission accomplished! Thank you guys for helping me : D.
Is there a thread about getting started with damage control 2.08? I rebooted with the new rom and it seems to work. How do i get tethered wifi and how do I add it to my rom? and Is there bugs that need to be fixed in damage control 2.08?
