Browser was running slow on Droid X. Pulled the battery but now am having problems with the SD card. I know about formatting but is there anyway to recover media before formatting?

You could try using a SD card reader and attaching it to your computer and see if the computer can copy the files from the card. If you can, then you can save them to the PC, reformat the card, copy files back to card and you will be back up and running. If the computer can't read the card, then you can try reformatting the card, but all that is on it will be lost.
