Replacing stock apps after root

I've recently rooted my Xperia Arc S and was wondering if any problems would arise if I were to completely replace a few stock apps. For instance, could I completely replace the default phone/message apps with third party variants or would I accidentally remove key files by doing so?

I'm new to this rooting shiz so any help would be appreciated

Use something like Titanium Backup to 'freeze' them first. That way you'll quickly be able to tell if you've deleted anything you shouldn't have and be able to return to stock.

Those system apps are needed for the third party ones to function properly. Messaging and phone being two of the most important.

I went ahead and replaced the messaging app anyway and so far no problem. I'm sending/receiving messages OK but I'll report back of there are any issues.

I did that once, just freezed it. Then I started getting duplicates or late messages. I had to restore and just hide the app using the Launcher's hide option.

Three days later and I've had no problems with my messaging service, so I'm scratching it up as a success. I've replaced the stock dialer with exDialer too which is incredibly fast to load compared to the stock. I've frozen it and I seem to doing well so far
