Restore SMS from SD card?

I had a HTC Sensation backed up all my music pics videos and sms messages using ES file explorer bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 restored everything except sms messages everytime i try it says 'please download an application that can open this file?'

This may be a dumb question, but did you install ES File Explorer on your S2?

Now i am pretty sure if you backup the original texts with SMS Backup & Restore and then restore them on the new phone with the same app it should work flawlessly, sounds like there is just a problem with ES file explorer.

How did you back them up using ES? I've not spotted that option, though I do only use a fraction of what it can do.

If you simply copied the database that may not be fully compatible between HTC and Samsung (there's a reason Ti Backup backs these things up as xml rather than just copying the db in its entirety).

I just backed up everything using ES and they are there in a folder called SMS backup just everytime i try to open it it just says Cannot open file

Amy218, i still think you should try rebacking everything up with SMS Backup & Restore, this is one of the best apps out there for this.

If this is impossible you might want to try downloading it and trying to open those files with SMS Restore.

From here go through the list, download and try each one. Otherwise you might just lose these texts.

Sorry, but I still don't know what "just backed up" means. You used ES File Explorer to copy the database to a folder? Or did you use its App Manager to backup the messaging app? Or something else?

I'm asking just because if I don't know what is actually backed up I can't work out what is needed to restore it (or whether it's possible). And from my playing with ES it isn't obvious to me what was done.

As the question still stands, it seems to us that you CANNOT backup SMS using ES. The option simply does not exist in the app as far as we can see. Which means to me that you probably saw something like maybe a folder in your old phone labeled SMS? And you copied it over to an SD card using ES? Is that what you did?

Ive used ES before to back up sms and it worked on two HTC phones and i restored them no problem but on this samsung it just wont work

As we already asked several times, how did you backup? Did you use a function on the app? Or did you just look for the SMS folder and copied it over? If you did the latter, then it should be pretty obvious why it did not work. HTC Sense and Samsung TouchWiz does things differently, and even if they're both Android they use different SMS apps. Its the same way why Handcent won't be able to restore Go SMS Pro's backups, because they're different apps. You need to use a generic SMS Backup app if you need to.

This is what I fear. But I don't know for sure what you have done, hence cannot be certain that this is the problem. We need more detail about how you backed them up using ES - just saying you backed them up using ES doesn't tell us enough.

In any case, do you still have the HTC? The simplest solution will be to back them up from there using an SMS backup app from the market (or MyBackup, which can also do this), copy the backup file to the Samsung, install the same backup app and restore them on the new phone. Then you can forget about the other backup. What you can't do is rely on the HTC or Samsung apps to be able to read each other's backups.

To tell you the truth all i know is i backed up everything on my HTC using ES and everythings restored except for my SMS it just says Cannot open file i dont have the HTC no more

I removed my SD card from my HTC Desire, did softward update and started the mobile. It removed all contacts and sms from my mobile. I wish to recover my valuable sms. How do I recover my sms stored on mobile?

How was the update done? Was it by running a program on a PC? If so that will wipe everything on the phone. Over the air updates usually don't.

To be honest, if you didn't make a backup first I think there's no way. The messages are in the phone
