I've been invited by Motorola to be a guinea pig for an unreleased software version of Android. Gingerbread? Honeycomb? Whatever it is, it's slated for later release on the Original Droid. I'm quite happy with my custom ROM and have been rooted and ROMmed since December 2009. My question to you is this:

    • Should I unroot, revert to stock and try this bad boy out?
    • Or should I be content to wait for a custom ROM to come out with all the best features of it?

Your opinion is valuable to me, and I would really like to know what you think.

I think I would unroot, if they send the trial update to you ota, find and share it with everyone here. ;)

Can you explain to me how, if I am unrooted, I can extract the OTA file and upload it? Plus I'll likely have to sign an NDA

I have also been asked to fill out the survey and they might use me as a tester. I filled the survey out and will wait to see if they choose me.

Will see. I do remember some comments about how to capture the OTA update when the 2.2 version was first being pushed.
I'll see if I can find them with search.

And oh yes there is a NDA in the survey ;)

Will everyone get the update or only volunteers?

The e-mail implies that only respondents to the e-mail who fill out a Motorola survey will be considered on a first-come, first served basis. I have no idea how many people will be testers... naturally I flew through the survey as fast as I could, hoping to get "in" :D

Were you registered in the Motorola Support Forums? That's apparently where they are culling potential testers. If so, maybe you'll get an e-mail. If not, well...

It's a matter of personal preference. I tend to find the stock releases lacking and custom ROM's seem to come out pretty quickly.

make a backup of your current ROM, unroot, give it a whirl.

as we both know, you can root in minutes these days & go back to a backup ROM you like if the beta sucks. might be kind of cool to see whats doing.

Hopefully I'll be able to re-root... Gingerbread may break root exploits but I may give it a shot

first, of course you must try to root it, I mean come on ;)

second, if it cant be rooted, you could still flash back to stock with SBF and then reroot that and then roll back to a recovery and be back where you were.

if the update is just 2.2.1 then obtaining root again would be no problem #1 because stock android is easier to root than skinned android and #2 because 2.2.1 has already been rooted and ONE-CLICK rooted so it shouldn't even be a problem. But if it somehow turns out to be gingerbread then hand it over to xda so they can root it and be on your way. Regardless you will be back in rooted glory before long. I mean unrooted isn't that bad....right?

Looks like the ayes have it! I have downloaded the stock FRG22D image and am ready to nuke the phone and flash it once I know that (a) I'm involved in the testing and (b) it's anything beyond 2.2.1 :)

If it's FRG83 I'll pass since half of us are already on it. I'm looking forward to telling you as much as I can about Gingerbread.

Feel free to continue voting and leaving comments. All are appreciated!

Oh boy, here goes... I just got an e-mail from Motorola that reads:

"Over the next 24 hours, barring last-minute changes, we will begin to distribute the latest Droid software to a select group of owners, and you should expect to be among them.* As a Motorola Feedback Network member, you are key to this test. Some of the owners are chosen at random and as a result, we won’t get feedback from them. But we’re counting on you and other members to provide us with a quick and accurate assessment of this update. After this pre-launch release, we’ll observe for a few days to make sure all is well, before releasing to all owners."

Update? Is this FRG83D? Something I've been running on for a MONTH? Or is it Gingerbread? I responded to the e-mail, asking what specifically they were sending me. We'll see what they have to say.

EDIT: I got a response: It is NOT an OS upgrade, but an update to 2.2

SO.. that was a bust! I will politely bow out of the test, since I am already running it...

Well, you are doing your fellow stock Droiders a favor by getting the update to them that much sooner by successfully testing it for general release. Good luck with the test :)

EDIT: Matt at Motorola was so perplexed by my hesitation to test (since he implied that the software would be pushed to me eventually anyway) that I went ahead and told him that I was (a) running a custom OS based on AOSP; (b) likely already running the software he wanted me to test for him, and (c) that the software works and is fine for general release. I'll bet he didn't expect that curve ball, but at least now he'll know why I declined.

If this is NOT Android 2.2.1 but instead a soak test for Blur on the Droid, well I'm not interested in that, either. I'll let jdailey & tfleming test it and report to us all.

Thanks for allowing me to be your guinea pig Chief ;)

I have not gotten anything yet and am starting to wonder if I was one of the bad MEID's that he mentioned in the original email since I am on a warranty replacement.

I did update the info, but you never know. At this point my hope is by participating now I will be picked for future ones that are better as unlikely as that really is
