Also have same issue. Why would they not just make it possible to make text alerts a song?

I'm looking for the same answer...very frustrating. even called verizon tech support. they said to look in the manual but all the manual tells me is how to set a sound, won't tell me how to add a sound to list of choices.

Connect your phone to your PC and mount your SD card. Create a folder called notifications on your SD card and copy the song you want to that folder. You'll then be able to use that song as a text ringtone.

I just went into my text messaging, hit menu, and then went into preferences. You can set up a custom notification for texts there.

(This is the same for gmail and also for emails.)

Pretty much what timmyjoe42 said. Are you trying to set up a text-tone that's not one of the defaults? You'll need a file manager (or need to be mounted to your phone) to do that.
