Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

Since I have most likely been banned, someone should make an account on the FS forum and say they really want to buy one of FS's Rogers Android phones, but want to know if anyone knows whether or not it will be upgraded to 1.6.

Then someone else can answer that Rogers won't confirm or deny whether or not they will update the OS. That would seem to satisfy the requirements of the FS forum. ;-)

UPDATE: Here are the new warnings I received from FS:

Hi mjschmidt

I'm sorry to hear android will not be supported by Rogers, but this is a Future Shop forum and is not the place for this type of Content. As I have linked to you before, our guidelines ( which you have agreed to follow when you created your account) prohibit the posting of this type of content.

I might be mistaken, but you were not injurious or objectionnal towards third parties AT ALL. Oh well, it's just FS. They can't do much about our situation, anyway.

Well, I guess he though Rogers might be offended that I pointed out the truth, that they won't confirm or deny whether or not they will upgrade our phones to 1.6! ;-)

Hey guys,

I really don't want to offend anyone here, but with Android 2.1 coming out anytime soon, don't you think that it is too late for asking for Android 1.6 update ???
I think we should put all our efforts and interest behind requesting for Android 2.0 update instead. No doubt Rogers HTC Magic device hardware with 288 MB RAM is capable of taking load of Android 2.0.

What say you ???

No offense taken. :) I agree with you in principle, however in practice I think it might be even harder to get _that_. When I spoke to Sherry from the OotP, she put me on hold to talk to Tier-2 support, and told me that while she spoke with them, them checked the HTC web site and saw that an update was available. That sounds like she was saying that until I called to complain they didn't know (at least in that office) that HTC had 1.6 available!

Now, we might get lucky, and they might have also seen that 2.0 was available, and maybe, just maybe, they will announce in the new year an impending release of 2.0, but until then, now that we've all been pestering them about 1.6, is it possible that asking about 2.0 might just confuse the situation?

I've started posting in the "Mobile Syrup" canadian cell phone users forum. These are people who talk cell phones, but not necessarily Android, so people researching cell phones might end up here.

You can see the current thread here: Rogers won't commit to updating Android phones to new OS versions - MobileSyrup.com Forum

I am getting blowback from some posters who seem to be equating 1.6 with Sense UI, and suggesting that it is an HTC issue, that HTC is skipping updating Dream and Magic to 1.6 to go straight to newer versions and that we have to wait for HTC to "push" out the update. One poster also suggests that asking Rogers to keep our Android phones cutting edge is equivalent to asking them to keep old StarTacc phones cutting edge. WTF?

Added my .02 to the thread.

For those that can afford it, looks like 2010 will bring us an unlocked phone from Google.
I personally thought it is bad idea for Google creating his own device since it might slow down expansion of Android OS. Yet after all this story with Rogers I've changed my mind.
I certainly will not purchase my next phone for my wife (that I planned to do very soon) from Rogers and I'll never sign 3 years contract again because I don't think I would benefit from it.
I'll wait and I'll buy next phone from Google: it will keep me all headaches and endless discussions with Rogers RCS, empty promises and confusions.
The only thing that could probably change my decision is a clear message from Rogers: an official promise to update my phone to version 1.6 and 2.0 in next few months.
Personally I don't believe it could happen :(

The "google phone" will apparently not have a "telephone" radio. Only data. So you will need to find an unlimited data plan. Calls will be voip.

There is no such thing as a "telephone radio" or a "data only radio". Everything is digital. For example, Rogers operates 2 different bands (850 MHz and 1900 MHz). All the different technologies (GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA) work on those bands and can be used for making calls or downloading data.

As far as I can tell, the so called "Google Phone" (aka HTC Bravo / HTC Passion / Nexus One) is nothing but another Android phone (albeit, a very high quality one with a snapdragon processor and running 2.1).

The fact that Google employees were given this phone to test might only mean that it will also be released as the next dev phone, or "ADP3". Just like the Dream and the Magic were.

Agreed.
I don't know when this device will be available in Canada. I don't know thing about warranty & service. I even don't know if it will get updates either OTA or USB.
But I'm so frustrated with the current saga that I'm ready to take a risk and pretty sure it will be better than Rogers "service"

Hi,

I first spoke with Chris on your live chat support tool regarding this issue. He recommended that I try filling out your contact us form. I sent in my request for information through your contact us form on December 10th and have not yet received a reply.

I am losing my patience with my concern and would like answers. I own a Rogers HTC Magic smart phone and would like to know Rogers' plan regarding firmware updates for it. The Android 1.6 firmware has been released by HTC to all carriers and has been pushed to customers through carriers in other countries for the same phone hardware. This updates contains some key functionality that is not in the current version, functionality that new applications on the Android Market are making use of. As a result there are a growing number of applications that will not work on a Rogers HTC Magic until you release the 1.6 firmware update.

I would like to know if and when Rogers plans to update the HTC Magic and Dream and LG Eve for that matter. You are currently selling these phones as the "ultimate web phones" making them sound like the latest and greatest, when in reality due to lack of updates they are behind the times and out dated.

Sincerely,

Jeff Dodds

Sent the above to the OotP.
