Hi, I did a lot of research all around but I didn't find a concrete definitive, answer to my question.

    Android Version: 2.1
    Network: Rogers
Are you rooted: NOT rooted and not planning to be.

Issue: I use my Desire with Rogers in Canada. My HTC Desire was bought from Telus and unlocked with an unlock code, then I changed to Rogers. Telus is coming up with the froyo update sometime soon, this week or something like that, and I wanted to know if I will be able to do the OTA update with from my rogers SIM Card when Telus releases the upgrade.

If not, is there any way of getting a Froyo OTA update? Without the need of creating a gold card? I know it is not hard, but I don't want or require a gold card for every future update, what if i lose it?. I just want an OTA update. I don't mind waiting some time. If this is not possible, could I find somebody who has a Telus simcard, put it in my Desire and download the OTA update that way? I've read that in Europe people got the OTA no matter what carrier they use their phone with, even if it is not the one they bought it from.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I emailed rogers regarding a similar problem except my phone is originally from AT&T in the US. Rogers replied me saying that unlocked phones are given a generic IMEI so it might not get the OTA update. They suggested that you go to the manufacturers website to get the update manually

SIM card has nothing to do with it.

If the handset is branded (if it was sim locked, chances are its branded too), when the carrier whose branding is on the device releases an update, you will get it, regardless of what sim card is in the device.

To unbrand and get OTA updates in future, you would need a gold card. Since your gold card is your SD card that is in your phone, if you lose it, chances are you've lost your phone too ;)

Also, not sure about the IMEI thing. Changing an IMEI on a phone in the UK is illegal. If unlocking a phone from its sim lock changed its IMEI (which it doesnt) then that also would be illegal in the uk, yet it is not.

Also, its worth noting that unlocking and unbranding a mobile phone are 2 different things.

Unbranding (using a generic rom) would give you a generic software build number, which then would receive updates as soon as HTC release them, rather than waiting for the carrier to do it. You could then not get an update from the carrier.

You want froyo then go this way, I did this month's ago and have since received updates from HTC and it works great!!! My Desire was a Telus also but it is now unbranded and only get's updates from HTC. Follow this thread carefully and update, you should then get the latest firmware from HTC since the firmware in the thread is not the latest!!! The latest is 2.29.405.2, at least the thread will get you started in the right direction. GOOD LUCK!!!
