Pete has a new BBeast based upon the 2.1 ROM - see AllDroid - View topic - [ROM 2.1] Bugless Beast V0.3 (2/21/10)

The thread is only from today but already 50+ pages long lol...

I am going to wipe and start from scratch and see how it goes....

    EDIT: Added the following

I searched for 2.1 threads using a couple of different search parameters, but did not see this listed, so if it already has been, my apologies.

I do have a question, though - since I have never actually done this, I just want some verification.

I plan on using the Nandroid backup to wip everything clean and start all over. I am assuming that I first perform a Nandroid simple backup, followed by the instructions on Pete's website, followed bu the kernel update, and then...

I can use my backup to have my apps installed again, using only /Data from an advanced restore menu?

Or would I be better off just manually installing everything and setting it up (of course this would take longer, but I feel this may provide a bit more stability....)?

This is how I restored my apps (coming from Sholes 2.0.6):

    cp /data/app/* /sdcard/app/

then after I wiped and installed v0.3, in recovery

    cp /sdcard/app/* /data/app/

just make sure to make the 'app' directory on your sdcard first. and when in recovery, remember you have to mount the sdcard and data partitions.

Good idea. I ran into a SNAFU in that it didn't like the Nandroid backup of 2.1 - it might be in the name, though, so I have restored my backup and am going to edit the directory name where the Nandroid backup is contained and see if it likes it then. Also gonna verify that the file size I got is the correct file size...

TBH, though, I might go with a manual reinstall of all apps - the one time I did this with BB is the one time I had the least amount of problems with an alternate ROM....

Looking at the physical backups (my Nandroid full backup versus the BB 0.3 Nandroid backup) it looks like what I surmised could be used just as easily as doing that cp command to copy the data directory, b/c in the backup folders are 4 items:

    1. boot.img - (assuming that is basically kernel and such
    2. data.tar - assuming that is my apps and such
    3. nandroid.md5 - assuming that is a true .md5 for error checking
    4. system.tar - assuming that is the OS itself

So, if I were to wipe, followed by restore Pete's backup full, I could then go back and restore my data only section of my Nandroid backup, and it should, in effect, accomplish the same thing, without being as complicated, right?

    am I missing something?

According to Pete this is based upon the 2.1 ROM leak that he got over the weekend, but other than that, it seems like it is pretty similar to his previous stuff.

The only thing I can figure is that it is using 2.1-based kernels, and the entire OS (as opposed to most of it) is now based upon the 2.1 leak.

Hah - learned something new today.

I like to keep my files organized, so when I DL a new update.zip or Nandroid backup to install, I usually append In parentheses) the name of the file - so I have several versions of Pete's Bugless Beast DL'd, and each has the name appended to the beginning (pre-pended, I suppose?)

Anyway, when I extracted the current Nandroid backup to my SDCard, I left the pre-pended name attached, so instead of just saying BDS-20100221-1630 in the dir name in /nandroid it said ([ROM 2.1] Bugless Beast V0.3) BDS-20100221-1630 - and Nandroid did not like that.

    Not
    One
    Bit

Ah, well, live and learn - about to reboot the phone with the new BB 0.3 and see how it looks and feels.

If I am using pete's previous 2.1 ROM, can I just use the update.zip to update to this?

I think so - it is not specifically mentioned, but it makes sense that you can.

Pretty sure I read somewhere in his thread that this new version is incompatible with previous 2.1 versions, and that nandroid was the only install method.

    I could be wrong though

I saw it written for other 2.1 (from AllDRoid) but thought that was excluding his own 2.1 - but I'll look around.

Pretty nice! I just installed it on my brother's phone. Multitouch browser is back. Animated wallpapers work fine (no interaction still)...Going to load it up on my phone and put it through it's paces..

Hmmm, most people are saying that Multi-touch browser is *not* working....

But I may have to revert b/c I have a major issue - my WiFi is not connecting - I have the settings right (after I manage the network here) but it simply will not connect to it. Deal breaker for me for sure.

Not sure which Pete's BB I am going with (0.7.5, 0.7.9?) but it will definitely be one of them - plus I miss the glass theme....

In terms of performance, this ROM is a winner. Very, very fast.

    About 8.5Mflops at 1GHz, and 10.5 at 1.25GHz.

Smooth homescreen transitions, even with my widget packed setup and live wallpapers enabled.

I don't even see the point in running at 1.25, since it is already buttery smooth at 1GHz.

I also like how (using Chevy's kernel that Pete posted), I can go down to 400MHz, so my standby profile is 400/250, instead of 600/250 (as it was with Sholes 2.0.6).

Only time will tell if that eeks out some extra battery life.

But overall, I give this release two thumbs up!

If I can figure out why my WiFi is not working (and this is off a clean Nandroid wipe and install) then I may stick with it.

I am going to wipe one more time and do it twice, just to be sure, and then install it and see what happens.

I really, Really REALLY need to learn the adb commands for doing all this - currently I just use adb to reboot the device lol

Again, you need to install the new KERNEL to OC.

You have to install the ChevyNo1 update which is an optimized kernel allowing for higher clocks.

John, which adb commands were you looking for?

Once you're in recovery, you can adb shell into it, and run these for a FULL wipe:

    format DATA:
    format CACHE:
    format SYSTEM:

each will take about 10s, so be patient.

More like automating the Nandroid backup / restore command, although those are useful as well....

UPDATE - WiFi is not working for me with this ROM. As I use WiFi exclusively at home (and for good reason, as I average well over 7 Mbps downstream) I am having to revert to another ROM.

I will probably go with an older BB based upon 2.0.1 and see which one has either Launcher 2 or else stick with it as it for now.

Which means I have a lot of App updating to do lol....

Ok, I just tested the Wifi, and it works for unencrypted networks, but not on my own WPA2 encrypted network.

I'm wondering if this could be because I flashed Chevy's kernel...
