So the kernel supports CPU scaling to 768 MHz out of the box then? That is pretty nice.

This might be the ROM that I start with. I want a clean slate, except for maybe Launcher Pro. Oh, and you know what is weird, it looks like the AOSP Android 2.2 ROM for the Sprint HTC Hero uses the older Linux kernel from Android 2.1. Android 2.2 uses Linux kernel version 2.6.32 while Android 2.1 uses Linux kernel version 2.6.29.

Took the words right out of my mouth, I was getting ready to say your becoming a Dev before rooting, LOL we won't stop busting his chops until he roots, LOL :D

No, I am not making a ROM. I meant that would be the ROM I would want to first try when I root.

I hope someone can elaborate about the older Linux kernel versions in the ROM though. That has been scratching my head right now.

By the way the kernel can be overclocked to 844;) I would not recommend, but it's there. 787 seemed stable for me

Yep so far many have had locks ups, lag and reboot at 844, have you seen a difference, I have not flashed it as of yet

It's probably close to the kernel he put out last week. Yes, I flashed it;)

By the way, if you are coming from aosp 0.9.7, no need to do a full wipe

    Nandroid
    Wipe cache (if you can)
    Wipe Davlik cache
    Flash 0.9.8
    Reboot phone

Yeah, 844 MHz sort of scares me. I would be afraid of setting my handset on fire. :D

Anyway, does anyone have any idea on that Linux kernel difference I noticed in my other post? I am just wondering why the Android 2.2 ROM does not use the Linux kernel that came with it standard on say, a Google Nexus One?

If you want an intelligent kernel answer, ask Deca over on xda;)

    hi,
i'm new to rooting and just did so recently, but haven't flashed a custom rom yet. i'm running 2.1 and after a lot of reading, decided to go with the aosp rom referenced in this thread. i just have a few questions that i couldn't find here or on xda:

    1) i know i need to do a "full wipe" since i'm coming from 2.1. so is it just data and dalvik? is it pretty easy to figure out in the recovery mode (sorry, i've only gone there once)?

    2) i made a nandroid backup when i rooted. so i don't have to do another one before flashing the rom, right? so when i do additional nandroids when going to the xth rom i try, do i just save the additional nandroids as different filenames in different folders? or is it automatic? do most of you only keep the most recent one on the sdcard?

    3) the radio thing is new info for me as of today. do i need to update my radio for this rom? i'm not looking to maximize speed as of yet.

    4) overclocking - do i need to make any changes to the rom if i don't care to go superfast (yet)?

    5) kernel - do i need to update?

    6) and finally, what does the [GPL][NONSENSE] mean in the front of the thread titles in xda?

    thanks for the help!

First you flash the recovery, then make sure your Nandroid is recent, then into recovery you wipe cache and data, then your ready to flash your Rom

When you flash different Roms everyone has there way of saving back ups, I simply do a nandroid and I do not rename it anymore as sometimes it messes things up, I then transfer a copy to my desktop and make another folder on my desktop and name it the Rom it is and simply store the back up in that folder already named

    3) the radio thing is new info for me as of today. do i need to update my radio for this rom? i'm not looking to maximize speed as of yet.

Radio is important when Sprint changes there radio, it is for better reception and data coverage, but it is easy to flash, you flash right over your Rom the same way you flash a Rom

    4) overclocking - do i need to make any changes to the rom if i don't care to go superfast (yet)?

No you can leave it stock with the stock kernel which is what I do

    5) kernel - do i need to update?

    No you do not

    6) and finally, what does the [GPL][NONSENSE] mean in the front of the thread titles in xda?

GPL I am not sure, but Nonsense means it is a Rom without sense UI

thanks for your help and answers, DonB.

i flashed the ROM and GAPPS last night - things went smoothly. i then found out online to use myphoneexplorer to sync my contacts, as i use outlook and not google contacts. worked well.

i've already noticed some things i was used to on senseui, that i need to get if available (or find in menus):
    1) widget to turn off mobile
    2) phone dialing to get options of desired contact person, without searching beforehand

otherwise, i like it so far.

    thanks again.

For question 1. I like switchpro widget in the market. It works and looks excellent. Fully dev supported with updates, too.

    2. I have used Dialer one (market app). It will give you the feel of the stock sense dialer.

Download an app called Quick settings, and you can add the mobile data on off , for phone dialing option as such, try Dial one from the market and see how that works for you

Running AOSP 0.9.7 now... absolutely love the ROM. Is there any changelog? Or does anyone know of the major / minor changes? Any bugs found yet? If no reply I will probably flash this sometime this weekend anyway.

GPL stands for General Public License. It basically means it is free software. :)

I hope that information helps you out. DonB covered everything else well. ;)
