    Hi all,

Going to upgrade the ROM on both mine and my wife's Orange Heros. They're both on 1.5 currently.

What I want to know is how does the 2.73.61.5 (and non-Orange 2.73.405.5) compare to "1.5" - have they changed the numbering?

The instructions say to "check you are going to a newer version" - how!?

1.5 is the android version (labelled firmware) and at the moment they are all 1.5 regardless of rom. This is sometimes known as cupcake and its the basic software that all the phone runs on. This is made by google.

The other number is the build number 2.73.xx.xx this is the software that works with the phones basic software to make it better. Its known as the Sense UI round here and is made by HTC

The rom version is 2.73 the other numbers are network and country specific. 61 is for unbranded devices 405 is for orange devices. If the first three digits of the build number are below 2.73 your downloading a new version.

    I hope that helps.

Both are based on Android v1.5 a.k.a. Cupcake and the 2.73.xxx.x ROM build and are functionally identical.

Settings - About phone lists firmware (OS version) and build number (ROM).

The former won't change until Android v1.6 a.ka. Donut is rolled out to the Hero.

With the latter, "2" signifies the major ROM version, "73" the minor, and "61" / "405" denotes either Orange or generic HTC releases. (The final "5" element remain a mystery to me so I'll simply ignore it) So if you're currently on a 1.xx.xxx.x build then 2.xx.xxx.x is newer. Similarly, 2.73.xxx.x would be superceded by (for example) 2.95.xxx.x or 3.xx.xxx.x.
