You need the custom recovery installed to do that...... Have to update ota with stock recovery....

so your saying the OTA replaced the custom recovery? or you need the stock one to be able to get the OTA?

It looks as though Im going to be forced to buy the "hotspot" service since I cant root. Hopefully someone figures it out soon because my phone is my business and I need my kindle fire to have the net access. Im tired of going to a McD's and Starbucks just to send invoices and bids. I would rather pay someone to work on the root than to pay those blood sucking verizon dogs. Pax... how bout you give them a virtual ball punch. You can use my brass knuckles.

Are there people working on this? Who? Would love to offer some support to them, and hear about any progress.

for the commando specifically? Probably not, as this is basically the leading site for commando Dev and anyone capable of that doesn't have the m100 update files

The only skills I have in this department is cheerleading.

Do a good job boys... Go team.... We'll get this device rooted!

Is looks to be a game of leap frog when it comes to gaining access. First we can root then a patch arrives to prevent it, then someone finds the magic key to unlock it again then the game starts again.
Since this might be the case, by any chance is there a way to use this phone on another network besides Verizon? Maybe one that offers unlimited data? Just wondering?

most likely you'd need to flash it to another network, if you talk to whom you want to flash it too, they might help.

Thanks. How would I go about doing that? Would I contact someone at lets say boost mobile or someone in this forum? Just thinking of the possible options just in case I decide to leave Verizon. Will the phone even work on another network?

It would have to be a carrier that uses cmda, right?

Can it be flashed even though root is unattainable?
  12. paxchristos

    paxchristos Well-Known Member

yes, CDMA carrier on the same spectrum (I.e. us cellular is big where I live)

There are workarounds to flashing provider...

ask Pax. doubtful though. whatever happened to that one kid that was bragging on his school webnews about how he was this master developer and he was going to make the commando into something great? all talk eh?

Jova33: A few things have been learned about the commando when you root it. If you do not freeze the files before you root the phone, you will have serious problems, and the reason for this is when you unroot the phone the dates change on the files, thus the orginal files are destroyed.

To freeze these files you have to buy the program, because the free program does not have the freeze program in it. As of right now, for the life of me, I can not remember what that program is called. Everyone uses it when they do a back up before they root the phone, sorry about that, jova33.

The other problem is that verizon has caught on what the people are trying to do with the Commando C771 (not all but some people), and they will no doubt be patching the phone with security updates from time to time. Actually what this means is no sooner when someone finds a way to root the phone, they in turn will find a way to patch it, maybe not right away, but never the less it will get done.

Paxchristos, has been trying to do the best that he can, but you have got to remember he is only human, and like anyone else we do run into serious road blocks from time to time.

It would not be surprising to me if someone does find a way to root the phone that has the m100 update, but the flip side is it could kill the phone competely when rooted, because verizon might have put a script file in the new update (m100) that searches for changes that leads to a root file or root program, thus giving the command to kill the phone, once found.

I'm saying it's doubtful that anyone is still trying to find an exploit for the m100 update. I've got the m080 update on my phone. works fine. titanium backup is the app you were speaking of.

and it's not just the commando that the last exploit was patched for. it was for all phones running gingerbread 2.3.3-2.3.6 if i remember correctly. i was reading how some devices they are able to flash to an earlier version that is rootable, but I guess that was something that was specific to that device.

personally I think those with a commando with the m100 update are sol if they want root. i could be wrong though. i've got a commando sitting here with that update installed on it, waiting to see if someone finds an exploit.

jova33: I agree, I do not think there will be a root for the m100 update, but only time will tell.

I think trying to make a root for the m100 update is going to be to complex. To many twist and turns, if you know what I mean.

From reading some of the forums, it seems as though people have lost all hope. Has there been any progress lately with the m100 root for the commando?

I check here and xda daily, and I'm going to say that's a big negative.

Highly doubt that (it'd be waiting for somebody to exploit it because it's need root to remove su)

Nothing happens past the *** Daemon started successfully *** message. I mean nothing for about 10 minutes, which I assume if it were going to work that would be pleanty of time. Don't not try it on account of me, my setup might be screwy.

The documentation does indicate that it is intended for ICS, but that probably doesn't matter any.

    The search continues...
