Root/SIMunlock problems

    Hey there!

Friend of mine asked me whether I could unlock her phone for other carriers. Since it's on Android I thought - why not? Should be easy, unlocking my Nexus was a piece of cake! Yet it seems more difficult than I thought.

First of all I read I have to root the phone. Then you advise backing up the /efs/nv_data.bin yet to do so I need to be rooted! Kinda crazy, but yeah ;)
Then I found some other option but it turned out I can't even access download mode (nor recovery mode), the 3 button combo doesn't work. The phone starts normally. I looked for a 3 button combo fix but to apply it... I have to be rooted!

I also tried to retrieve files using adb tool but my computer couldn't find the device:
    Code:
     root@bungi-dell:/{..}/sdk-tools# ./adb-linux devices
    List of devices attached

The phone had USB debugging enabled.

Now I am kind of stuck here. Is it even possible to unlock the phone in this situation?

    Thanks in advance,
    bungi

    EDIT:
Forgot to add - Samsung Galaxy S i9000
software version: 2.1-update (or so it states in settings menu)
