Spent some time with giantpune fixing poot and testing on my Venture. Success!

See his post regarding the Optimus Elite:
Don't forget to click "Thanks" on his post!

Just above the attached files, there is a Sendspace link. That's got the version that will run on the Venture. Or, use this QR code:

Once you have the .apk, install it. An easy way is to copy it to the SD card and use a file manager (I like AndroZip because it's small). The QR code probably skips straight to installing it for you, I didn't get to test it.

Then find Poot in your apps and run it. It will require you to install Ministro II. Once that's done, it will download additional libraries.

Now you're ready to go. Run Poot, tap the button to Poot your phone, install SuperUser, install RootCheck. Then enjoy...install BusyBox, use a file manager to delete/rename that godawful Virgin Mobile boot sound in /system/media/bootsound.wav, whatever you want, you are root.

You can delete Ministro and Poot once it's done.

    AWW YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

Now you need a custom recovery so you can make backups and be safe to delete anything you want.

Go to the "manage applitacions" and select ministro, then cleack "clear all data" and uninstall the program. Then do the same with the Poot.apk. Then download the poot.apk again, and make sure you got the one that we want. md5sum is c578e97498a03df80ec692fbe9103a38. Install that apk, run it, let it install ministro from the play store, and see if it works.

Thanks buddy ill do what I can in the mean time for tthat vm card.. do you know where I go to change the boot up sound I can't change it for the life of me...

Until you root it, you won't be able to change/delete that stupid bootup sound. Once you do it's a file in /system/media. It might be one level deeper, like /system/media/audio. It's named something like bootsound.wav. I don't remember but the folder and filename are obvious.

You can also safely delete the boot and poweroff animations from the same folder. Then instead of the Virgin logo you'll get a much nicer, smaller Android logo.

Hey I went there and deleated it and tryed to put an mp3 song into replace it and that won't work do I deleat the media folder completlyy?

I would not delete the media folder. It is harmless and takes no space if there is nothing in it.

IIRC the boot sound was named bootsound.wav and I think it's probably hardcoded to use that filename, so if you want to replace it you'd need to use the same filename. You might get away with renaming a .mp3 to .wav, but most likely it actually needs to be in .wav format as well as having the .wav extension.

I did exactely wht the guy said. I installed poot, then the second app ministro. Finished and went back to the app and clicked poot. Within a second it gave me words. My screen shows most words and all have a [+] that I can see. I installed root checker and it says no root. What have I done wrong? It seems it worked for everyone else using the venture. Please help and thanks!

yeah this root method works like a charm. I have my wife's phone rooted, bootsounds silenced, camera click sound silenced, integrated all the updated apps back into /system/app, made the home, back, menu and search buttons wake the phone, and installed cwm recovery.

If anyone wants to know how I got the menu, home, search, and back buttons to wake the phone just ask me. its a fairly easy process.

Also for the time being, if you want to add scripts ran at boot, you can make a script in /system/etc called, give it 755 permissions and place in there whatever code you want to run, because without us being able to build the kernel, this is the only way so far to have a sh script ran at boot. I have a script that i used a long time ago on the intercept that will run scripts from /data/init.d and /system/etc/init.d at boot that can be named as and used to have init.d support on this stock kernel. Just pm about stuff like this if you want to know more details. Luckily the kernel already has ext2,3, and 4 support so apps2sd is not a impossibility at the moment.

Can't wait for some source to get out so we can get some custom kernels out. And by the way, to anyone who will eventually be building kernels for this phone, this uses the same chipset as the optimus v, so maybe the oc tables used in their oc kernels can be applied to this kernel once we get some source out.

I'm just very excited to see some development going on this phone!!

    Thanks to all!

Yes, I would definitely like to know how to get those buttons to wake the phone.

After I deleted /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg it went "boop boop" when I shot a photo. I had to delete /system/media/audio/ui/Lock.ogg to silence the camera. Was that the same for you?
  24. b_randon14

    b_randon14 Well-Known Member Developer

Well I just made some silent .ogg and silent .wav files and replaced camera click, low battery and bootsound.

And to make those keys wake the phone you have to edit the surf_keypad.kl keylayout file that is located in /system/usr/keylayout.

Find keys 158, 139,217 and 102 (158 and 139 are near the top and 217 and 102 are at the bottom) and go out about 10 spaces past where it says home or menu etc and type in all caps WAKE_DROPPED. Do this for each of those keys and save the file. Reboot and you are good to go.

Key 158 is back, key 139 is menu, key 217 is search and key 102 is home!
