This may be very simple, but im lost...

I have a samsung moment with android 2.1

a while back when the update came out i am almost positive that i rooted the phone when i upgraded from cupcake. I also added a few things like live wallpapers, 3d gallery, and the nexus-like home thing...

when i turn on the phone i have a SDX screen, and i had to install those things from the recovery mode, but i dont think my phone is rooted because i recently tried to install barnacle to tether my laptop and it wont work...

ive tried searching for an answer and all i could find was to try to use terminal and type su in the command line to see if it is rooted... and that didnt work.

I know i can root the phone, but id rather not wipe it again if i dont have to...

    any suggestions?

this information means that you may possibly be rooted but still have the stock kernel installed. In order to get wifi tether to work you need a kernel that supports wifi tether. Vamps kernel is the only one that i know specifically supports barnacle (there are others that work with other wifi tether apps, specifically meats, kronepj's, and infernal) and may work with barnalce. Install one of these kernels and then report back.
