I just bought an EVO, and you don't know how excited I am. I'm coming from an iPhone. EVO is a little harder to use, but it's so feature packed, that IDGAF how many extra steps I need to take to do something on the EVO, compared to the iPhone.

I know there are a million threads about rooting, and rooting for noobs, and yes, I looked at the suggested threads before making this one. Before I take this leap of faith, assassins creed II style, I just want you guys to give me that extra push to go ahead and do it.

I'm looking for the FIRST pro that comes to mind, and the FIRST con that comes to your mind when replying to this. Yes you can list more, but the first of each is what I'm aiming to look at!

I look forward to joining the android scene, and contributing like you guys are to this thread, for future threads, and future new comers.

    Thanks, once again.

Thanks for being the first person out of everyone to view this to take a shot at responding. I appreciate it.

I'm looking forward to increasing my battery life, removing the sprint pre installed nonsense, and putting the DROID lock back on, not HTC's slide down nonsense.

And I don't know where to start.

Froyo was released, and I don't know if a root has been released for it.

I see the IDIOT PROOF guide, but don't know if it works for 2.2 yet.

Word of advice from a beginner. Do not use Unrevoked's root method if you want to flash roms. Use the simple root method and get it over with. I did the simpleroot and am now running Fresh 3 and it's a huge difference in overall performance.

Yeah I went through a lot of headaches before using simple root. Wish I just did that first.

or if you like to do things manually you can use this thread. it has several methods in it and post 2 has some common errors and fixes for those along with some faq's and videos. you should look at section 5 it applies to the 1.47 updated evo's which you should be on.
    [TUTORIAL] EVO Full Root|OTA Root|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing|for n00b's + videos - xda-developers

I found this to be faster (because of how long the simple root download took) then simple root and easier for me.

check out this thread for some basics of rooting and terminology. noobs, are you confused? Here is quick INTRO TO ROOTING to get your bearings before plunging in!

oh and removing sprint apps is specific to the rom you install. you will need to have your NAND unlocked to be able to install any rom.

    pro - free wifi tether
con - more work on your part, unless you like this type of stuff then its not really a con.

    Happy rooting :)

What does OTA mean, and how can I check to see if I already installed an update that's going to screw me from rooting?

OTA(Over The Air),u can check for updates under Settings/System Updates. After u root u wanna make sure u do not apply any OTA update from Sprint or u could loose ur rooting privileges for good.Just wait for a rooted version of the update which usually happens within a few hours from the official release.

Sorry, I should have elaborated more. Basically your on the newest version of Android and I'm not sure there is a way to root it yet. You might be able to use the HTC RUU and go back to 2.1 and root from there then install the Fresh ROM. I think your in the same boat as the people who used the leaked update and lost root. Now you need to wait for a new method.

Ahh I see. Well maybe it is already rooted? Download something like terminal emulator from the market then type su, if you get permission denied your not rooted. You can also download drocap2 and see if that works (screen shot app).

Probably was someone who flashed the phone already and freaked out and sold it asap.

See if its rooted. Go to Apps and look for something that says, "Superuser Permissions"

If you do then you have a rooted 2.2 ROM.
If not then you are using the stock 2.2 ROM.

No sir, I clicked applications, and I don't see anything that says that. Just stuff I can stop from running, and debugging stuff.
