Does anybody know how we would root this rom without flashing one of BH_MAN's kernels? Would we have to use that try3 file again?

Try 3 exploit was closed with the first ota! Root will not happen at all without the kernel if that will even work now and that's a big if because Sammy know everything Eugene did! There are no dev working on this phone, so no there will be no root.

whatever, there was no big reason to have root if we were not able to over clock or have tethering.
I will only be keeping this phone for a few more months till I have the money to by a better one!

True...there are a lot of good androids in the pipeline fir tmo right now...when you get the cash there will be a great phone waiting for you. I will say this snapdragon is not everything as the mt3gs is almost as snappy as n1 ands faster than the droid (I know droid doesn't have a snapdragon but it is clocked higher than the my3gs) ive personally compaired it to both and it simply flies only time the others are faster is web browsing but not much faster believe it or not.

And with 2.2, the whole OS is going to run laps around all the other older versions including 2.1!!!!

The rooted kernel we have will work just fine for this 1.6 ota. The 1.6 you have in your phone right now is the same 1.6 you will be receiving via ota.

It may be the same OS version "1.6" but it doesn't have all the bug fixes for are specific phone and other features. Yes the modded kernel would work for root but it might break other things too! Creating new bugs!

Im not sure what you mean by other "features". The release they are pushing out will be 99% identical to the one that bh man released because it was directly from samsung, im pretty sure they havent changed much of anything from the release bhman was given, especially in this short amount of time. If they were unwilling to support the device up to 2.1 they would more than likely go "oh here is that 1.6 we did but never released, lets just give them that"

Wouldn't it be possible (assuming somebody could be bothered to do it) to take the rooted kernel, and put it in the new release (overwriting THAT kernel). You'd lose any improvements in the kernel itself, but that is probably not a big issue.

To Root the New Update, just Flash the 1.6 Rooted Kernel ODIN package & it should be fine :)

The only reason why I personally want root is so I can use Titanium because a few apps I have keep getting updates that only add more ads to them not functions. Other than that I see no point in keeping root, but that is only because I have no idea what/how to do things. I am extremely good at breaking things though ;-)

So let me make sure i dont F up. If i flash back to stock and get the OTA. To get root again just root again and flash any of the 1.6 .ops(ex: twiz, no twiz & galaxy) or do i not have to get root again and just flash the .ops?

    Nu11u5-

Would you want the help of a newbie (to rooting)? I'm getting an unrooted Behold II today, and I'm looking for the OTA update plus WiFi tethering. That's really all I need.

HOWEVER, I didn't need to put a 35% bigger engine in my car, and I did that. I'd like to see what's under the hood here.

I may be new, but I pick up on anything someone shows me after the first time.

One last thing, I may take this over to Simple Mobile which is an MVNO that uses Tmobile's signal. You would assume I'd still get the upgrade, right? If not, perhaps I'll get on Tmo for a month.

Right now I'm just in need of volunteers with updated phones. The actual modification of the kernel to enable root, while I understand the process, will be handled by BH_MAN. I'm just handling the data dumping, partition shuffling, and Odin package building.

Rooting can be a complex endeavor as you are basically finding a way around software and hardware security put in place by the manufacturer to stop you from accidentally (or purposefully) doing something good/bad with the device they didn't intend. Its hacking, but fortunately you can build off the work of others in a lot of situations.

The Behold2 is rather unique, even for Samsung devices, so other rooting methods do not apply so well. From now on we will use a modified Recovery image (alternate bootup that runs a bare OS for debugging/updating the main OS) that allows access to the rest of the device. This will allow us to permanently enable root in the main OS and make it usable for programs. Its certainly not as hard as finding a new exploit/hack in the phone to get root, but its not so simple either.

As for carriers and Simple Mobile:

I can't say either way if you will get the OTA with them. However, going back to T-Mobile won't be necessary. Once I can build the update packages and post them on the Internet you can install the update from your computer instantly.

Thank you. Why TMobile doesn't do this is beyond me. More room for error on the user's part I suppose, but the option would be nice.

    concealed,

Once I have the rooted kernel image I'll need you to flash that and then dump the rest of your ROM to file. I can walk you through this pretty easily.

In the mean time make sure you can ADB into your phone, and have Odin ready.

Don't you have all the partitions except the recovery partition? You could use the existing old rooted 1.6 kernal to dump that then you would have all the partitions needed to build the ODIN.

Yes that would work. I'm still rooting the OTA update's kernel, though. I've actually already done the modifications (pretty simple) and just need to repack it and flash it. There were quite a few changes made between the build BH_MAN got his hands on and the one that came out OTA.

I haven't gotten a dump of the other partitions yet b/c the SD card is not accessible with Recovery on startup (system partition is 150MB+), and I was a little stretched for time which was needed to walk my help through the extra steps. The partitions will be dumped from a live environment once I test and upload the rooted kernel.

Was going to root the New Kernel tonight, did I understand you correctly that you already root it, or you just making the new odin from the ota update?
Thanks & please let me know what is needed from me..
