Before i can enter the password the screen closes quickly. Any ideas please?

No, just before i`m about to start typing.

(1) It won`t close when i start typing but it`s quick to go out if i delay. (2) New phone. (3) Nothing.

Well how fast does it stay lit up? Normally the lockscreen will only give you five-ten seconds to start typing before closing again.

No, i have to push the side button again, to open the page again to enter a password.

Looks like "Smart Stay", settings "Smart Screen"/ Smart Stay, is an answer, i don`t know of any other. Keep looking at the screen and it stays open, look away and it closes. Amazing.

Not sure if that works on the lockscreen. I have that active on my Note 2 and from experience it doesn't work when you're in the lockscreen.

A possible work around would be to go to Settings, developer options, "stay awake"

to keep the screen awake while plugged in. (not ideal)

A possible way is to extend the screen timeout at the display settings.

Well, push the button on the side and the password screen appears again, then, type in the password before the screen closes.

Seems it does unless I'm (probably) missing something.
Wait I'll try it....
Hmm well mine is fully charged so the screen is turning off (i think that's why anyway)
