Samsung virtual keyboardSupport

O2 UK customer, freshly updated for H6 to I4 via NPS. At last...

The virtual keyboard initially didn't appear, but after starting a fresh app using the keyboard and doing a hold-down until 'Input method' menu appeared and then choosing Samsung keyboard, I seem to have got it to life.

So, the stock Android keyboard is gone and we appear to have a custom Samsung job instead. Anyone found any docs for it? I'm puzzled as to what some of the settings do - Auto append? Regional correction? - and what on Earth does the '1/3' key do on the numbers keyboard?

I'm finding not having a shift key rather irritating too. So much so that I'm giving AnySoftKeyboard a go instead. Or is there a way of getting the stock Android one back?

    I never had a chance to try the other keyboards, as mine is I4, but I find the lack of a shift button to be hugely annoying. I don't want to have to go to MENU to select abc, Abc or ABC and then back to my typing. How about you just tap shift to get a single char for caps or if I hit it twice, keep it caps-locked and a tap again to have it back to lowercase. Simple. {sigh}

I am also forced to type everything in landscape as my fingers dont seem to fit that well in portrait, but then I'm not allowed to have a non-qwerty keyboard. And it's still small keys and shows me multiple lines of text. How about when I have the keyboard up, you let me have big buttons and a small amount of text? Or configurable (set 1, 2 or three lines of text visible) and a keyboard template that fits each. No?

Lastly, in reference to my other post about security, I don't trust anyone else making a keyboard app for me. It's bad enough the potential for abuse from basic apps, but an app that replaces the keyboard...and that has full internet access/access to contacts? Hmmm. Not on my phone, you're not.

Exactly how the plain Android keyboard in H6 behaves.

Looks like samsung has been working on a new virtual keyboard for its Android devices. I found these pictures over on Android Authority and they look similar to the keyboard we got in our update. As these pictures look a little different i'm guessing we can maybe expect more changes to the virtual keyboard in future updates

Wow that keyboard looks like it sucks really bad. I was using the HTC one for a while, it actually works really well, but lags (i type fast!)

I really like the one on the Hero Galaxo rom tho, its so fast, faster than my iphone. It doesnt look that amazing tho.

Is it as fast? How is it better? I considered using it so many times, but never took the leap. Convince me! because i want a good keyboard!

well its if you use it with its defaults its not that fast as it looks for similarities and works on guestimates of your messed up key presses, you can turn this off though.

the reason i mainly use it is because it seems more accurate and natural to use. you can enable it so that you can swipe it out of the way or swipe it to numbers

its a very functional keyboard that is feature packed. it is not faster that the galaxo keyboard but is by far more accurate and easy to use.
obviously it comes at a price :p

I installed it to try it out :) Seems like the HTC keyboard is pre installed on this galaxo rom.

you changed input type to better keyboard right?

yeah the htc one is on here by default but reskinned to all black. i didnt like it and there is no return key.

    Yeah i did :)

Long press on an input box, select locale. You'll see Touch Input AND Android keyboard. So the black one is actually the android keyboard. There's Touch Input too which is white and grey. Its alot better at predicting words etc, but its laggy.

Better keyboard seems pretty nice. Alot of options. I keep tweaking them, and i'm almost at my ideal setup.
