    Hello everyone,

I'm looking into getting my first Android phone and had a quick question regarding the Gorilla glass. I know it is more durable and scratch resistant, so I'm just curious if everyone would still recommend getting a screen protector to put on the Droid X?

    Thanks!

I personally am not going to get a screen protector. It's basically the highest quality glass that you could get on a smartphone to my knowledge. The iPhone has always used it and the original Droid has used it.

Here are my two cents on the topic.

I had an original iPhone, an iPhone 3G, Spring HTC Hero, Palm Pre, and now a Droid.

I do not see the point, or the feel the need, to use a screen protector on anything with Gorila glass. For me, it degrades the touch-screen experience, and is pointless.

The HTC Hero and Pre, on the other hand, absolutely required a protector.

If I do end up purchasing a Droid X, I will be keeping the screen, and in all likelihood, the phone, naked.

What do you mean? It's not an option really, the phone either has it or doesn't have it.

So, the Droid X will have Gorilla Glass? I'd love to not need a screen protector, but I sure wouldn't want the screen scratched.

Does it have the same type of glass as the original Droid? How has that worked out with scratches?

Droid X definitely will have Gorilla Glass. I had the Droid and kept it naked for about 6 months. It had lots of nicks and scuffs on the body from tons of drops all over the place, but never even the slightest scuff/scratch on the glass. (It was recently stolen so I'm holding out for the X to come out.) My friend with an Incredible has two tiny hairline scratches on his gorilla glass screen and has no idea how they happened. Both are going in the same direction and are barely visible. This guy is more careful with the tiniest cheapest piece of technology than I am with my most delicate, expensive items.

So we are baffled how he got the scratches but we now know it can happen. They are barely noticeable tho so not a major concern in my eyes. I will not get a screen protector as I feel they interrupt the touch screen experience. I may get a case this time around tho.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll definitely take that into consideration whenever I pick up my phone. Definitely picking up a case for the phone, but it sounds like the screen should be okay without one.

Does the Gorilla Glass smudge less than other screens, or would it be worth picking up a screen protector just for that purpose alone?

Incredible does NOT have Gorilla glass. HTC phones do not. They use a different screen-tech.

The Droid Inc does NOT have gorilla glass, already been confirmed by HTC. No Android phone currently sold in the US does besides the original Droid.

I think I will be getting a screen protector for my Droid X. I have a Droid now and I used to use one, but not anymore. To be honest, I like it better without it and I havent gotten a single scratch (and I dropped it once on pavement face down) but with the Droid Xs massive 4.3" screen I do not want to risk it, and a screen protector doesnt hinder the touch screen too much, but it is noticeable.

Is it confirmed that the X has Gorilla Glass? If so, why isn't that noted in any of the should I switch from Inc to X threads? Seems like that would certainly be a factor of some sort.

Still seems like a risk to not get one. Are there any reports of people's Droids getting scratched or is it very hard to do?

My goodness! This thread is FILLED with misinformation.

    1) The Droid has gorilla glass
    2) HTC has written us Incredible owners that it does have gorilla glass
    3) Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not indestructible.

Folks over in the Incredible forum who did not use a protector were sorry.

I recommend you use a screen protector and a protective case of some sort.

I never used a screen protector on my Incredible, or my Eris, or my G1. Never had a issue with any of them. Maybe I take better care of my phones, idk tbh. My phone is always in a pocket by itself though, maybe that is why they were never scratched.

DOn't use one on my Samsung Blackjack that is over 3 years old. There are some minor scratches on it and it spends most of the day in my back pocket even in tight jeans. If that treatment on normal glass causes minor abrasions then with Gorrilla glass I should be good considering it won't be in my pocket.

I will be getting a skin and screen guard for my DX (hopefully available when I get the DX). Don't want a naked phone rattling around in my handbag.;)

Not to doubt your knowledge, but i don't think the inc uses gorilla glass, at least not as high quality as the droid. First watch the videos of them demonstrating the glass. They cant break it if they try. Look at the number of broken screens on the inc forums compared to the droid forum. Also i had the droid for about 6 months with no protector and the screen was flawless. My inc has a couple slight scratches in the screen, you can hardly see them but they are there. Both were kept in my pocket with nothing else.

Fair enough. I just am hoping htc would not out and out boldface lie to the public like that. In any event, there were plenty scratched up Droid screens, fwiw.

First, concerning HTC's confirmation that the Droid Incredible does have GG: I am assuming that you're referring to the single online conversation that a user had with a rep. I may have missed some other confirmation, but as far as I know, that was it. I think the general consensus is that the shear amount of broken phones from about 3 feet off the ground (not even on extremely hard surfaces all the time) indicates the absence of GG. I won't say that the rep didn't say that it had GG, but I will question whether or not that is a mistake that didn't really seem to be repeated by other reps.

Concerning GG and the Droid X: we still do not know whether it has it for sure. I have a bad feeling we won't know till it's released (but trust me I'm asking anyone on here who has one or has inside info!)

Also, despite GG being scratch resistant, there are still plenty of people who have scratched it. If I had to bet, I'd put money down that dirt is harder that the GG, and hardness is really the only thing that matters when it comes to scratching your screen. Don't believe, me? Google something like "hardness scratch". That means if you accidently drop your phone and it skids across some dirt you may have scratches. Also, if you get some dirt in your pocket and it rubs your screen the wrong way, you have scratches.

I will almost assuredly be putting either a Phantom Skinz screen protector on mine... if not one of those, I'll go with one of the crystal clear static application protectors. This is a decision I made after pouring over almost every screen protector forum in the Incredible forum and quite a few of them in the Droid forum. Hope this helps.

EDIT: I provided a little more info about screen protectors in this post if you're interested. Also I wrote a ton abt cases: http://androidforums.com/accessories-droid-x/110333-armor.html#post1040861

It's not like it's an option how can you not get it other than buying a phone that doesn't use it?

i highly doubt htc uses gorilla glass. there have been way too many issues brought up about it. I remember reading some guy dropped his inc and the whole screen was shattered.....:/

Motorola has confirmed X has GG via email. Iphone has never had GG. The HTC support email a poster has states they do not use GG, and would only say it's a proprietary screen they developed with their suppliers (Samsung & whoever).

Thank goodness. With a screen that size, we'll need it!
