so i just got my incredible in the mail to replace my droid and i'm hoping that i just have a lemon here. anyone that is coming from a droid, do you notice a huge drop in quality in the screen resolution vs the droid? yeah, the incredible's screen is brighter, but the screen is so heavily pixelated compared to my old droid. it's a big shame because i absolutely love the phone but the websites are almost unbearable to read. anyone else notice this?

It looks just fine for me. I always read websites with text up close. The text adjustment in the browser is awesome.

Inc has a slightly lower screen resolution than Moto Droid.

It more has to do with the screen technology itself, than the slightly lower dpi. The AMOLED does this weird pixel configuration, where the Droid has a more standard screen.

Either way, they both blow my old Storm out of the water. And pinch to zoom solves a lot of small font problems.

I prefer the Droid slightly more, since sharper image. Best way to perhaps describe is think of a plasma and LCD screen. Though a plasma has more brilliant colors and better contrast, the little dots can be seen and there is a slight (very) screen door effect.

Droid screen is smooth as butter, but Inc screen looks more "vivid". Kind of like comparing a mini plasma and LCD screen. Depends which you prefer. Droid seems more natural (IMO).

BTW, the difference in resolution is very very small. The better sharpness people see on Droid is due to the technology and NOT the extra screen resolution. This is obvious if you calculate the actual pixel total difference :)

This has been discussed about Nexus already, so same tech issues and lower perception of resolution on Inc compared to Droid.

Unless you like reading micro sized text the incredible screen is superior.

Droid can be zoomed in too, but I agree that Inc is better in that regard.

completely agree with you rushmore. the incredible's screen is brighter and more vivid, but in terms of clearness, the droid is lot more legible. it's mostly noticeable on websites, but you begin to notice those pixels no matter what you are viewing when coming from a droid. i may just be a little too picky here, but i guess this is what i get for not trying it out in the store instead of preordering the phone.

I bought an Incredible today and gave my wife my Moto Droid. I think you're right. The images and text are a little sharper on the Droid as opposed to the Incredible.

Personally, I'm ok with it because the Incredible is faster and doesn't chug a lug when the live wallpapers are running. But to each his or her own.

Got mine from Best Buy, since concerned about radio reception (still am and doing more tests). Seems that between both devices, the perfect device exists ;)

If you have not seen the Droid screen, you would think the Inc display is amazing. I think the plasma (Inc) and LCD (Droid) analogy is reasonable. Just depends on which you prefer :)

    AndyH,

Most reports are that the Droid overclocked to 800mhz does not chug. Did you have yours rooted for OC? I am doing NOTHING to Droid until I decide which to keep.

Yeah the colors are really nice on the incredible but at the same time the screen looks alittle pixelated its not horrible though it still looks quite nice.. but when u look a the droid screen for months it looks like a downgrade ...anyway my incredibles on the way and the droid is going to be my backup

good point about coming from a droid - the display on that device is amazing, so it's making my decision on which to keep that much harder. even though i prefer the droid's display over the incredible, i'm probably going to stick with the incredible. the sense UI and snapdragon processor are easily making up for it. :)

never had my droid rooted since i always knew that i would eventually sell it to someone else. just wanted to keep it as "clean" as possible for the next user.

The Motorola Droid only has 6.75% more resolution than the Incredible, so the difference in apparent resolution should not be too noticeable.

One big reason why the Incredible is better is that the black level is superior to the Droid. If you're in a pitch dark room, the Incredible can effectively "turn off" each individual pixel, and therefore eliminate the light it produces, whereas the Droid has a backlight that is always on, and a black screen will appear to "glow," producing a grayish cast in a dark room. Contrast is x1000 favoring the Incredible over the Droid.

480x800 (Incredible) is also a more widely accepted standard as opposed to 480x854 (Moto Droid), so there may be better application compatibility.

The Incredible uses the same AMOLED screen as the Nexus One. The screen weirdness compared to the Droid has been discussed before and it is caused by the non-standard pixel configuration they use:

    PenTile pixel layout:

Each pixel has either Red/Green or Blue/Green but not Red/Green/Blue like a standard LCD display (Droid).

This lowers its effective resolution to about 2/3rds that of a 480x800 screen with a standard pixel configuration (approximately 392x653).

More information can be found here:

Secrets of the Nexus One's screen: science, color, and hacks

Also, the Droid has a screen resolution of 480x854 which makes it a bit taller. This is because when both screens are put in landscape, the proportions of the Droid are 16:9 (like a widescreen television) and the proportions of the N1/Incredible are 16:10 (like a widescreen monitor).

The AMOLED screen will have superior contrast, more vivid colors and better black levels.
The Droid LCD screen has superior absolute brightness and clarity.

Hence the REAL reason Droid looks clearer ;) Wild how some of the professional reviews state the reason is the Droid has more resolution. They are right, but not for the direct spec to spec reason they refer to. The reason is the actual pixels you see for images is about 1/3 less than the 800X480 official spec. Still looks good, as long as you do not compare to Droid.

Does this count as a spec scandal?? ;) No point in joking, since almost all displays are trending to this technology :( Perhaps it will be improved to get rid of the dots.....

I compared the two of them side to side today in the store and the Moto Droid's screen won, hands down.

At all brightness levels the MOTODROID's screen was brighter,
and more importantly the COLORS are way more natural on the MOTODROID. On the Incredible I found that colors, particularly white, had a green/blueish tint. OTOH the MOTODROID's whites looked great. Also, text looked VERY sharp on the MOTODROID while on the Incredible it looked sharp but you could see those subpixels if you looked closely.. the text has weird edges, basically. The MotoDroid's screen is unbelievably awesome.

The incredible is also a droid

The motorola droid is a droid.

I guess you can see why i cant figure out which phone for the most part your talking about.

edit, i just had to re-read it a couple of times, your calling the moto droid the droid and the incredible droid just an incredible..

PS. the eris is a droid too, but dont tell r2d2, that mofo is a jealous little f-er

When someone says, "Droid," they're usually referring to MOTOROLA Droid... in case you're new... or been under a rock.
