screen turning off/locking while using phoneSupport

Just bought my Droid Maxx after coming from Galaxy Nexus (original droid before that!) - very proud of my transitions. ;-)

anyway.. i think my phone is working in solid order except a few times when using it last night for surfing or just trying different apps, the screen would turn off (lock mode) while i'm literally scrolling down a page.... even while my finger is touching the screen it turned off.. my screen timeout was set at 1 minute... after lots of tests and getting it to happen about 5 times accidentally.. i was able to figure out what triggers it... if i hold the top of my hand over the top edge of the screen (in alignment with speaker & camera) from anywhere above the surface up to about 3 inches i can get it to going into lock mode..

i've done lots of searches and many suggestions are to disable pocket detection... while thats not an option on 12.15.15/4.2.2 droid maxx...

any suggestions? should it be this sensitive? i mean its a huge problem while holding the phone in landscape mode.. it would left hand cradling top of phone, right hand cradling the bottom of phone, heck i should play riptide and see if it turns off while just driving in the game.. actually i just did another test... the phone will turn off even if just the top right or top left of the screen is close (but not touching my hand), if it touches, it drags down the notification bar..

The proximity sensor is on the front at the top. It is what is is being covered by your hand.

With me I always had to remember to turn the screen off before putting it in my pocket. If I didn't it would wait until the screen time out before turning off.

I wrote a Tasker profile to address this. The shortest time I could set it to was 7 sec.

    - Profile on - with the screen on ... put it in my pocket ... screen turns off in 7 sec.

    - Profile off - with the screen on ... put it in my pocket ... screen turns off in 1 min.

Try running in Safe Mode by starting a normal power off and when it gives you the dialog box long press on "Power Off". Then respond "OK".

If the problem is there in Safe Mode go back to the place you bought it and have it looked at. I think exchange may be needed.

Thom I see that you tell many people to boot into safe mode. I have no idea how to do that. Can you give a quick tutorial here?

    Thanks!

Sure. There is a Sticky in this forum with a lot of useful things like that.

    With power on.
Hit Power switch until dialog shows up about powering off.
    Long press on Power off.
    Press OK.

It will reboot into Safe Mode. Indication in lower left corner.

I recommend t6hat you don't install or uninstall anything while in Safe Mode.

Normal power off/power on will take you back to normal mode.

If you have a screen protector on the phone, sometimes badly designed ones, which cover the proximity sensor, show this behavior. Try removing it if you have one and see if that's better.

thx Thom.. yes it does it in safe mode.. but if i open Chrome in safe mode or regular mode.. it does not shut off thru the same procedure.. leading me to believe its working as designed.. did you try it on your model? fairly sure they all do this

I played with the home screen as in your video ...

If I use the default launcher under KitKat the home screen will fade after 5 seconds if the proximity sensor is covered.

If I us Boat Browser with the default launcher under KitKat the screen does not fade if the proximity sensor is covered.

If I use Nova Launcher Prime (my preferred launcher) under KitKat the home screen does not fade if the proximity sensor is covered.

Conclusion ... it's a bug in the stock launcher ... fix is to us Nova Launcher Prime.

I'm seeing the same thing on my phone with 4.4.

I've had the phone 4 months and I've seen that happen only this time when held portrait. I've had it happen before when typing landscape because my left Hand is close to the proximity sensor, but just a few times now that I know it happens.
