Screenshot app for UNrooted phones w/gingerbread?

I was using Shoot Me on my EVO 4G before gingerbread update and now it asks for root access. Emailed the dev and asked if he knew of any screenshot apps for UNrooted phones and he didn't.

Someone posted in another thread that supposedly in gingerbread there's a screenshot app - but I can't find anything. Anyone else have luck?

Haven't heard of any apps that will allow screen shots, and are compatible with gingerbread. I have 2.3 also, and I've had no luck.

So, I understand that ShootMe and other screenshot apps were originally designed for rooted phones, and that the Evo had a loop-hole that allowed it to work prior to the 2.3.3 Gingerbread update, but why then does it no longer work after the Gingerbread update when some sources claim that one of the enhancements with Gingerbread was adding the ability to take screenshots without root-level access (see online article below)?

Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread Allows Screenshots Without Rooting |

Is it a matter of third-party app. devs developing software to take advantage of the new functionality provided with Gingerbread 2.3.3, or is this simply inaccurate information, and we really have no hope of screenshotting with the Evo unless we surface-dwellers dig in and root our device?

I'd really like to someone with fairly authoritative / substantiated information to reply to this if you're out there and can speak to it.

I'm an un-rooted Evo user, and I'm not all that enchanted by the idea of rooting, so I'm interested in any developments surrounding the ability to screenshot on the Evo with the latest Gingerbread OTA 2.3.3 update.

Note: This issue is also under discussion under the following thread:

    Thanks

My guess would be that it was unintentional even if it worked on some versions of Gingerbread.

This is also the first I have heard of such thing and having AC link to the AOSP git source is pretty lacking in the "proof" department.

Anyways, it's a security threat and will be (and maybe already is) patched out if it worked at all.

I'd suggest grabbing the SDK if you dont want to root. At least until they add it as a real feature with a proper permission.

Also, what AC should have done is reported it to Google to give them time to patch it out.

How do I "grab the SDK?" Where? Link?

Oh forgot to add that in another thread someone clarified that there is NO native screenshot app in Gingerbread and that screenshots were never meant to happen and that Google labeled the ability of pre-gingerbread unrooted screenshots via screenshot apps that required root access was a "bug" and "security risk" and that it was patched in 2.3.3.

SDK works fine on Macs -- it's based on Java/eclipse which are cross platform.

Got an unrooted htc desire hd, and I use a very simple app to make screenshots : myphoneexplorer, it's free from the market, pretty easy to set up between your phone and computer, works wonders.

I want to do this - but it seems kinda complicated and being a newbie to changing stuff around in my phone I'm worried I'll screw something up. Plus I'm on a Mac with OS 10.6.7 but Have VMware Fusion with Windows 7 64bit.

Anyone done this? (installed the specific Android SDK & USB drivers as the article above mentions)

Checked it out and went to the site to download the PC app and no Mac OS version. But I guess I could try it using VMWare Fusion w/ Windows 7 64 bit..?

    THanks Jerry

SUCCESS!! I followed the steps in the article - downloaded the app from the market and from the web. The only thing that's wrong (at least for me running WIndows 7 64bit Ultimate via VMWare on Macintosh) was that the article says to connect CHARGE ONLY and when syncing the app with the phone I kept getting an error. So I changed it to HTC SYNC and worked perfectly.

Just FYI when it connects with your phone is starts to sync your contacts, calendar, etc - I just X'd out of it and it stopped. You can go into settings and set it to not automatically sync.

Saving screenshots worked great. I'm glad I can now take screenshots even if it's via USB and my "virtual" PC.

Why not just root GB and put ShootMe back on?

Cause I don't want to root my phone just for screenshots. This way works just fine for what I need.

I wonder how the dev accomplished a non-root screenshot app?? Thought Google "fixed" this "bug"?

Still installing on my Mac - will post a review once I get it working.

EDIT: Hangs on "Enabling Screenshot It" on the Mac version of the desktop app. Waiting for a reply from the dev....

Hmm. I've been in touch with him for the past few days trying to get a bug fixed. So far he's been reliable as far as replying to and sending me emails with updated versions of the app.

I just use "Screen Shot It" on my Atrix 4G. Easy, cool features and developer keeps adding updates to make it better.
