Some of these apps seem to require a lot of access to the phone's resources. I was looking to download a ringtone app and it wanted access to my phone usage, directories, pretty much everything.

What is with that? I can understand a gps program knowing where I am, but why should a ringtone program care?

Should we just trust these things or?

This is my first smartphone and I'm trying to understand the risks with all of these free apps.

    Thanks,

For the most part if the app is in the appstore its probably safe. If course check the reviews to make sure, but 99.9% of the time its ok. Some apps do seem to access alot of other resources, but i've come to expect it after loading about 30-40 apps on my device and after using the android platform for a few months. Of course its up to you, so don't take my word for it.

In all truth, if an app has 4+ stars with pages of reviews, chances are that its safe.

Personally, I use Lookout which scans all apps for known viruses/malware.
